The Medzhidi Tabia Fortress in Silistra is a fascinating historical site well worth a visit. Built in the mid-19th century during Ottoman rule, it’s one of the best-preserved fortresses in Bulgaria and offers a glimpse into the region’s military past. The fortress is surrounded by lush greenery and has a quiet, almost mystical atmosphere.

One of the highlights is the collection of military relics, including old cannons and other artifacts that give visitors a sense of the fortress’s strategic importance. Walking along the walls, you can imagine the battles and sieges that once took place here. Another unexpected but charming feature is the presence of turtles wandering around the grounds, adding a unique touch to the experience.

The fortress also offers fantastic panoramic views of Silistra and the Danube River, making it a great spot for photography. However, be aware that Medzhidi Tabia is closed during the winter months, so plan your visit accordingly. When open, it’s a quiet and underrated destination that’s perfect for history lovers and anyone looking for a peaceful yet intriguing site off the beaten path....

A small but still a fascinating fortress due to the fact that it has been used in 7 wars including both world wars and still remains a solid, well preserved, well masked! (since it is not visible unless you are standing right in front of it), defence of the Silistra city. It is managed by the owner, Mr. Valentin himself which is so kind and patient to answer all of your questions and show his collection of weapons in the museum inside the citadel. The tour will take about an hour and a half to visit every corner of the fortress and even the undergrounds. There is a water spring and there are benches close to the artillery guns in the courtyard and some of them are partially functional in case you are wondering how it works. The cost for a family of 2+2 is 10 leva (~5 euro). Would definitely recommend to visit this site! P.S. there are lots of turtles inhibiting that area so don't be surprised to see one walking...

It is quite difficult to reach the location by car. I had some difficulties but the employees of a nearby Shell gas station directed me on the route (the blue route în the picture attached to this review). The best route is the long one. Free parking near the location. A very well preserved fortress that must be visited if you plan to reach Silistra. There is also a place with benches where you can relax after the walk. The entrance fee can be paid in different currencies. The staff is friendly.

The Turkish Fort "Abdul Medzhidi" or the so-called Medzhidi Tabia fortress, from Silistra is the most preserved of the six points of the Turkish fortification system, which played an important role in the Crimean and Russo-Turkish wars. Very nice to visit but i suggest going in the morning on later on in the afternoon because in the summer time it is so hot there.
