Beloved to have been inhabited earlier but certainly utilised by monks in the 12th / 13th centuries these natural caves in a limestone cliff have a significant historical and religious significance. There is a real ambience to the gardens and woodland walk a short distance to the catacombs... (Stout shoes advised for all and the caves / catacombs are not wheelchair accessible ) This being said , if you are reasonably active and not more than about 6'0" in height, this is a wonderful way to spend a few hours out of the bustle and beach bums of sunny beach! (About 10min bus ride away) There is a calmness and solemnity here I found nowhere else on the black sea coast... Just magical... Around 5lv for as long as you care to wander round. There are sometimes shows but these are priced in addition to entry and are presented in Bulgarian language... The more I discover about Bulgarian history the more I want to return... This place was well worth the visit and...

Well really it's just a few caves in the face of a 50 metre cliff. But they're very well presented with charming gardens and a little museum. And the cell at the top has a sea view. I guess in the evenings there's some sort of audio visual presentation with projections against the cliff. Monkish music pumped around the gardens adds to the atmosphere. There are lots of steps so it's not for those whose movement is challenged. Also, I imagine at peak season there will be constant tour groups, three coaches arrived and departed in the hour or so I was there. I walked from Golden Sands but it's a hike alongside first a busy road and then a bendy one with...

Waste of money and waste of time. For 3 of us we paid 195 levy, might aswell put your money in the rubbish bin. Tour agency just rip you off for this trip. Very unhappy, not recommend at all. And be careful if some of your family can't walk properly because you won't be able to take that tour but tour agency said nothing, only interested in money. One of our family member can only walk with retired walker support and of course she can't walk to the monastery because its lot of steps and hills, what did we pay for???JUST A BIG RIP OFF AND...

I took the bus 109 which drops you off around 3km before the monastery. The hike through the forest is nice and the rock monastery itself is very interesting. There is a small museum onsite explaining the history of Christianity in the region as well as the works of the Archeological Society (foundwd by the Skorpil brothers in the 19th century) that led the excavations of, among others, this monastery. There are catacombs onsite (about 700 meters walking distance from the monastery), which I unfortunately failed to visit.

Absolutely incredible to see the nature in there. Make sure to watch the history in the museum, inside the actual monastery you don’t find much besides walking around and maybe imagine how things worked back then. Don’t waste your time by going to the catacombs there were nothing there, however if you do it’s a lovely walk, watch out if it’s raining it gets very slippery! Entry should be around 5 lv (2,50€) On your way out try the little fountain water, is potable and a lot of locals go there to refill their gallons
