This is an elephant sanctuary for the former work horses of Angkor Wat. Up until about 2017 you could ride elephants in Angkor Wat. This being considered abuse of animals they banned this in 2017. Now what can you do with elephants not producing anything? Kill them??? Nope! You place them in a sanctuary and let tourists pay to visit them. Tours run from Siem Reap twice daily, a morning tour and a noon tour. Its about an hour drive to Phnom Koulen and the sanctuary. Some of the elephants walked from Angkor to here, so treat them with respect! You will be able to pet them, feed them and walk amongst them, which is totally magic for an elephant-fan like me! They even pose for photos♥️🐘! The mahouts treat them well, and the elephants play in the mud and have a great time here. These are huge animals and you need to sign a waiver in order to visit😎. Huge kudos to the staff which is extremely knowledgeable and service minded! I became a little sick on the road here but was treated as a king🙏🏻. Highly recommended place - and you are supporting a near extinct...
