On a day when infinity pools of person-water permeated our clothes had us desperately seeking conditioned air. A busstop ad turned an unplanned afternoon into a day dreams are made of.
If we’re being honest, a wildlife and aquarium park would never have made it to our slow travel checklist. It’s far from the city center and, like most things in Siem Reap, it is dwarfed by Angkor Wat. After taking the long ride freckled with rice warmed in bamboo stalk rices, waving children, and wide open fields; our accident became a happy one.
Angkor Wildlife & Aquarium is a beacon of conservation, rescue, and education in Cambodia. Here salt water, fresh water, land, and air animals are cared for by a staff of educated locals passionate about Keeping Cambodia Wild (my term, not theirs). The signs beside the animals tell a story of their ecological contribution as well as their proximity to extinction.
We are scuba divers so our favorite part of the day was the feeding of the fish by a staff scuba diver. Talk about a dream job! He gets paid to feed the sharks, eagle rays, huge barb, tiger fish, and countless marine lives in a gorgeously planned acrylic tank. We must’ve looked like kids in a candy shop because Mr. Aing Sochea guided us on behind-the-scenes tour of the aquarium. He also provided us with valuable information on the collaborative conservation efforts by his team, NGOs, and the government. While the signs are detailed, the private tour brings the plight of the animals to life.
Since we dropped in, we sadly didn’t plan our time well. If we could do it again we would come early, book a private tour (that includes hotel transport!), follow the feeding schedule of the animals from the fish to the otters to the sun bears, and have a mango smoothie while watching the tigers shade themselves from the big Cambodian...
