Abraham Lake has been on my bucket list for a few years now. It's a hydroelectric reservoir on the North Saskatchewan River where you could view frozen bubbles! These bubbles are methane gas that are trapped in ice, produced by bacteria that break down plant matter at the bottom of the lake. While frozen bubbles can be found in many lakes, Abraham Lake is known for the clarity of the ice as well as a high concentration of bubbles. Wind polishes the ice, creating a smooth, glass-like surface, which is ideal for the best viewing!

Before heading out, make sure you prepare yourself. First, the ice thickness should be between 10-15 cm before you walk on it. You can look up ice reports on "canadianrockiesescapes.ca" before heading out. Ideally, mid-January to early February is the best time. You also want to avoid snowy days as the snow could cover the bubbles leading to a disappointing experience. Dress warmly. Even though it was a beautiful 3 degrees Celsius on January 30 when I went, it was very windy! Out on the lake, the wind was strong and cold. Make sure you wear gloves, a toque and extra layers! Ice cleats help as you are walking on ice! While I ventured out with just my winter boots, I found I had to be extra careful to avoid slipping. Do not try this with sneakers! You might want to pack some extra socks, just in case you step in the wrong spot!

There are different entry points at the lake but the easiest is to put "Abraham Lake Ice Bubbles Viewpoint" into Google Maps. It will take you to a parking lot off the David Thompson Highway (AB-11W). There is also a washroom there. As a side note, you can avoid the tolls by taking the AB-2N from Calgary and turning off at the Benalto exit, which is about the same distance as the other options (about 3.5 hours).

The Ice Bubbles Viewpoint is a great area to see a lot of bubbles! However, it is also the most popular area. Thankfully, on the Thursday afternoon that I went, there was only one group of tourists there. It was incredibly serene. Be careful making your way onto the ice. I found a path where there was a bit of snow for traction and headed down that way. You didn't have to venture too far out to see the bubbles! There were lots of interesting bubble formations.

Because the wind was very strong and cold, I didn't stay too long. The views were very breathtaking. It felt weird walking on the crystal clear frozen water but after a while, you get the hang of it. There's some truly stunning scenery out here if you wanted to make...

What Makes Abraham Lake Special?

The lake is famous for its frozen methane bubbles that form under the ice in winter. These bubbles create surreal, almost otherworldly patterns, making it a dream location for photographers and nature lovers. The contrast of the icy blue lake against the surrounding snow-capped Rocky Mountains is simply magical.

Best Time to Visit

While the lake is beautiful year-round, the true magic happens in winter, from late December to early March. This is when the methane bubbles are visible, trapped beneath the thick, clear ice. However, winter conditions can be harsh, so come prepared for freezing temperatures and strong winds.

Activities • Photography: The lake is a haven for photographers. The frozen bubbles, jagged ice cracks, and surrounding mountains create endless opportunities for stunning shots. • Hiking: In warmer months, there are nearby trails for those who want to explore the area. • Skating and Ice Walks: While not officially regulated, some visitors skate or walk on the ice. Be cautious and check the ice...
