I've only camped here once and during August long weekend so take it with a grain of salt. My party of 5 decided to stay at the site for 2 nights. Initially when we pulled in it was satisfactory in cleanliness, nothing to pick up afterwards from the previous campers. Because it was the long weekend, we decided to avoid the vault toilets (this campground does not have flush toilets & showers) to use our own facilities for our hygiene and washroom needs, therefore I'll avoid commenting on the vault toilet cleanliness. From the campground, the lake was accessible but was very small, so only kayaks were able to venture out from the campground. Fishing IMO was not viable from the campground and it seems most of the accessibility of the lake are owned by private land owners, so that was unsatisfactory in terms of being a lake to kayak/boat on or just to look at. There were no beaches from the campground from what I could see. There was one walking trail near our campsite on the south side of the campsite but be warned: there are poison ivy in the brush and because of the heavy rainfall this year, they were enormous (height: 30-50cm). There are two potable water well pumps, one in the north and south side of the campground. The north side (yes, I used both because they hide thier pumps really well) was definitely harder to use, requiring 2-3 pre-emptive pumps before water flows and the water appeared cloudy yellowish, like if there was dirt or other impurities in it. The south pump required no pre-emptive pump and came out clear, nonetheless do not drink. All in all the campsite was great, well kept but will require deeper personal research into Buck Lake and community to optimize your enjoyability...
Read moreGiving 3 stars to this provincial campground. The county campground, called Buck Lake Camp Ground, is in the town of Buck Lake. The county campground is like a big lawn but is close to the boat launch and is across from the rodeo grounds. Dont confuse it with Calhoun provincial park. Calhoun is across the lake from the town so you will need someone to drive the truck and boat trailer back to Calgoun. Lack of boat launch and swimming is the reason for 3 stars and not more. The water looks pretty good and would be nice to jump into for a swim off the boat away from shore. A proper boat launch is available in the town of Buck Lake. Hand launching of small boats such as 12' and canoes is easy at Calhoun.
In the past there was a boat launch at Calhoun. The creek running through the camp allowed beaching of boats at some camp sites so in that regard the camp is lesser than it was even 3 years ago.
Perhaps due to overfishing in the past, I dont know, catches are limited to 1 walleye per day 50cm and over. You will catch lots of 49cm fish but very few 50cm. Jack is catch...
Read moreI thoroughly enjoyed my 2-night stay at Calhoun Bay. Trees, water, and good weather. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because the water is only really usable for boating. Not inviting to swim in from the narrow shore access. I don't think you can launch anything with a motor from the shore either.
We got a good site in the back corner of the loop. Lots of trees throughout the campsite. The sites closer to the road are slightly cramped compared to the ones deeper in. All of them have moderate to good privacy. Toilets and non-potable water pump are an easy walk from most sites. Toilets are clean. There's a path at the end of the loop that takes you on a short marsh hike. Limited cell reception. No firewood on site. We went into the town of Buck Lake and got a pair of bundles for a good price at the General Store.
Overall, it was a nice, simple little campground. Great if you have a canoe or kayak or paddle board to enjoy the lake with. The...
