This canyon is located very close to the town of Drumheller, no more than 15 minutes by car from the town and just 5 minutes from the famous Royal Tyrrell Museum which has one of the most fascinating fossil collections from the Mesozoic Era. This Canyon is an excellent point to appreciate the badlands terrain of the area and a visit during early morning or at the sunset not only will provide the perfect light if you are a photographer but also you will avoid the heat specially during summer time. I particularly love to visit this area during late spring and early fall when the weather is mild but if you visit during summer time do not forget to bring enough water, sunscreen and wear hiking boots. Remember to always stay on the trails as this area has many abandoned underground coal mines which are still on fire besides we need to always protect the surrounding habitat. Try to read and learn always about the history of the place, from the time of dinosaurs, the time of the Wild West that gave the name to the canyon, to present day meeting the locals and supporting the local shops and other attractions in the town and around...

This stunning geological formation offers spectacular views that are nothing short of awe-inspiring. The canyon's unique rock formations, carved over millions of years by erosion, create a dramatic and colorful panorama that's perfect for photography and exploration.

The hiking trails around Horsethief Canyon provide various vantage points, allowing visitors to fully appreciate the vastness and intricate details of the canyon's landscape. As you traverse the trails, you'll encounter sweeping vistas, deep ravines, and the striking contrast of the canyon's earthy tones against the sky.

Beyond its visual appeal, Horsethief Canyon is steeped in local lore, including tales of outlaws who supposedly hid stolen horses in the area. This blend of natural wonder and historical intrigue adds an extra layer of fascination to your visit.

Overall, Horsethief Canyon is an extraordinary destination for nature enthusiasts and adventure seekers alike, offering both unforgettable views and a rich...

This place was fun. Very busy last Saturday (Aug 7), but ample parking. Ice cream truck parked there but no one operating it. There is a sign and beyond that a Vista giving a great view of the valley below. Took the path on the left down into the valley and had a great explore. Intereting rocks and formations. This is a fun place for families, but elderly and those who are not that fit may want to exercise caution as the loose gravel on the way down is a slipping hazard (saw a guy slip) and the way back up could be strenuous and a bit steep. Not too far from Drumheller and just a short way up the road from the Royal Tyrrell Museum, this is a great place to visit...

A great place to stop!! While it may not be the grand canyon it is amazing to stand at the top and look down into the canyon. When people are walking along the bottom you get a good idea of how deep it is. I was going to walk down but did not want to come out with another brand (you have to read the story at the top to understand). Lots of free parking but it can get busy. VERY hot and dry with no washrooms. Bring water, especially if you are going to hike into the canyon. There is a very nice little snack place there with a good selection and GREAT prices. Operated by some very nice people. Open during the summer season.
