Mistaya Canyon is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful stops along the Icefields Parkway. Located about 75 kilometers north of Lake Louise, the trail head begins at a parking lot, from which a partly steep hiking trail leads about 10 minutes down into the valley and to a bridge. The steadily increasing noise then announces an extraordinary natural phenomenon: Mistaya Canyon - a winding, dark gray gorge with white-foaming whirlpools and impressive small waterfalls. Despite this impressive natural spectacle, you should be careful: the edges of the rock slabs can be very slippery! If you have a little more time, bring sturdy shoes and food and hike up on the other side to Howse Pass (10 km there and back), from where you have more great views of Mistaya Canyon. If you don’t have that much time, a stop at the canyon alone is...

Flowing gracefully from the melted waters of glaciers, this heavenly river winds its way through a lush forest, casting an enchanting spell upon all who witness its beauty. This untamed river is both awe-inspiring and adventurous, urging caution from visitors [as navigate it has some really powerful currents near the bends]. Yet, it is an experience that left us breathless. With its picturesque surroundings and vibrant atmosphere, spending a couple of hours by the river on a bright and sunny day is a captivating affair. From the mesmerizing scenery to the invigorating aura, this heavenly river offers a truly unforgettable encounter with...

Mistaya Canyon is a standout stop on the Icefields Parkway. The trail can be steep in parts, but the breathtaking views of the waterfall and canyon make it well worth the effort. With multiple viewpoints and access to the river, this loop trail is a must-visit. I stumbled upon the trailhead by chance and was blown away by its beauty. Even with kids in tow, we were all in awe of the stunning scenery. Highly...

Consider this your sign to stop postponing and finally get those tickets to Banff. 😉🤍 Banff has been on my bucket list for ages, and it’s one of those places that look so much better in real life. @ 📍Mistaya Canyon, Banff National Park, AB 🇨🇦 (SAVE for future trip planning) All credit : @shannon.adventures 🚗Located 45 minutes north of Lake Louise Village, or 1 hour and 45 minutes south of the town of Jasper. Mistaya Canyon is a short hike from the parking lot. But well worth the stop! (It’s also less busy than some of the other stops that are visible right from the parking lot along the Icefields Parkway) 🥾1.6km out and back trail 🏔️79m of elevation gain ⏳Allow 30 minutes to 1 hour for this stop (longer if you decide to make the rocks a perfect spot to eat lunch). 👦Site is not super kid friendly as there aren’t any safety barriers except for when crossing the bridge. You’re able to go right out on the rocks next to the canyon. So I’d recommend you keep your kids close and hold hands. And please remember that a wet rock can be just as slippery as ice, always exercise caution.⚠️ ❄️Accessible year round. But Parks Canada does not recommend winter access beyond the bridge. Microspikes recommended during the winter months, even if you only go to the bridge. 💰No fee for entry, but you must have a valid National Parks pass to drive the Icefields Parkway. ❔Would you stop here? Follow @shannon.adventures for more adventures in the Canadian Rockies! And as always if you intend to visit our wild spaces, please practice the principles of Leave No Trace and leave the area better than you found it.
