A Priceless Experience!!!! My boyfriend and I booked the interactive tour in advance so we could stop by on our way to Canmore. We were both super excited and knew this would be the highlight of our trip. First impressions were great - the sanctuary’s fences had beautiful wooden silhouettes of the wolves which only heightened our excitement and anticipation. When you first walk in there’s a little shop with merchandise and other goodies such as tea blends - each flavour having a wolf from the sanctuary assigned to it (such a cool touch, love how personalized and detailed everything is). We came 20 minutes early and had already signed the online waivers, so we got our wristbands and were told we were allowed to walk around the sanctuary from outside the enclosures until our tour was ready to start. The enclosures are huge and give the animals plenty of space. They are kept in packs of usually 3-5 wolf dogs. Walking around you’ll see signs with the names, pictures, birthdays, wolf content and descriptions of each wolf dog. I love it because it gives you insight on their personalities, relationship dynamics and how closely related to wolves each Wolfdog is. As our tour started, we were led outside and let into the enclosure with the Yamnuska Pack. They had chairs set up for us to sit so that our movement wouldn’t spook the Wolfdogs. Our tour guide was amazing, she was very knowledgeable, well spoken and seemed to care immensely for all the Wolfdogs. We got to feed them treats, “Kuna” came up to us and took treats straight from our hands! At one point all the wolves in the sanctuary started howling, it was so beautiful. After awhile we were led into the Cascade pack. We met Loki, Rue & Horton. Loki was a lower Wolf content meaning he was more dog than wolf so he was more friendly and willing to come right up to us. After the tour concluded, my boyfriend and I walked around the entire sanctuary from the paths and learned so much about each dog. Overall it was one of the best experiences I’ve ever had and I hope to come back with the rest of my family so they can have as much fun as we did! Thank you so much for all you...
Read moreFrom the moment we booked the Interactive tour online, we have had nothing less then an Amazing experience dealing with Yamnuska Wolfdog Sanctuary!! 🐺 On this past Friday Dec 15, my boyfriend and I did the 2pm Interactive tour and had Lindsey as our tour guide! She was super friendly, very knowledgeable and so informative. You can tell she loves her job and is an amazing handler of the wolf dogs. We learned so much about the care, love and effort Yamnuska puts into their wolf dogs and into making sure they live a happy, healthy and fulfilled life. Knowing they are nonprofit and run solely based on donations is amazing. We actually did a birthday donation last year for my birthday to help support Yamnuska which you can do on Facebook on the donation post. Hopefully the $125 got far for your wolf dogs!!! :) We walked the grounds and did the sanctuary walk which was an easy and accessible walk. You can read all the info about the different enclosures and wolf dogs on the plaques on each enclosure. Learning about their wolf content, where they came from and their names and the type of wolf they are. We also had a cool moment and got to hear the wolf dogs howling back and forth. So unreal to hear that right in front of you. Such a memorable experience. For the Interactive Tour: We got to go into 2 different enclosures: Yamnuska and Cascade. First we met the wolf dogs: Kuna, Nova, Zeus and Nikki in Yamnuska. Kuna came upto us and ate the deer jerky out of our hands. She was very selective and only chose that out of our treats. lol We were so excited to meet her as she is the first wolfdog here at Yamnuska and she was very sweet and friendly. Next we went into Cascade and got to meet the wolf dogs: Horton, Loki, and Rue. Loki cleaned us out of our treats very quickly. Overall an educational and exciting experience! Beautiful spot to enjoy wolf dogs! Very glad we finally got to be able to visit. Thank you to the staff at Yamnuska as everyone was so welcoming and very friendly. Can’t wait to...
Read moreI visited the sanctuary on July 9th, 2018 on my way back from Lake Louise and Banff. I went by myself and pre-booked for an interactive tour. Luckily there was ONE spot left for the last tour of the day.
I wish I remembered the name of our guide. She was a superstar!!! So comfortable in delivering the information she was giving us about Wolfdogs, how they come to be, the difficulties of trying to own them like a pet, their diets, their behaviours and the differences between the high content wolfdogs. She answered questions with confidence and great knowledge! It was really neat to see how the wolfdogs have built a more trusting relationship with her and the other staff.
Instructions given on how we would be interacting in-person with the wolfdogs was very clear and concise. I felt very relaxed (and excited!) to meet them! We were seated on chairs, instructed not to call out to them or reach out at them. With a handful of treats, the wolfdogs would approach and gobble them out of our hands long enough for us to snap a picture and move on to the next one!
It's important to read the rules posted on the website for the interactive tour before visiting. No dangling clothing or loose articles, no kids under 12, etc.
The tour took almost an hour and then we were free to wander around the sanctuary and check out the other wolfdogs and read the informative plaques posted around.
I was definitely moved by the story of the sanctuary and am excited for my business to sponsor a wolfdog (for a very low price!) so Yamnuska Wolfdog Sanctuary can continue the amazing work they do for these misunderstood and too often exploited animals.
Thanks for all you do! Say hi to Rango the Coydog for...
