I canât tell you just how much I do not recommend this place. I have visited so many of Canadas tourist destinations, big and small, and this was the worst by far.
I visited this place with my mother with high hopes, and it turns out to have been taken over by foreign investors who clearly do not know anything about upkeeping a business to its countries cultural standards regarding scenic tourist destinations.
Immediately upon arrival to the front waiting area, you will find gacha games and a balloon maker that have nothing to do with Hells Gate, just cheap dinky toys with such designs as airplanes.
The reception desk was manned by someone who was clearly still learning English, which in and of itself is not a problem, but they only spoke to us enough to take our transaction for the tickets and tell us the wait time, and nothing else. There was no attempt to engage in conversation, as to why we might be visiting, or to speak about the destination that we were paying around $40 a person to visit.
The only information we received about the destination was a two minute rehearsed speech on the tram ride down, by another person who was also struggling with English. Every single staff personnel we spoke to struggled with English, which is a horrible choice for a Canadian tourist destination.
Every single staff person was either talking to their coworkers in a different language, or on their cellphones. Not a single staff person tried to engage us. I had so many questions about the Tram and the area, and it felt like I couldnât approach anyone.
The gift shop had the most generic items, the ârestaurantâ (if you could call it that) had only prewrapped sandwiches, pop, and chips. The sweet shop with a giant sign for âice creamâ outside? Had one single scoop of ice cream left. The rest of the sweet shop was sparsely stocked with candy that looked like itâd been sitting untouched for a very long time.
If the business owner is reading this, I have recommendations for you. One, hire Canadian employees to work at your Canadian Tourist Destination. Youâll find that that alone will help increase guest experience greatly. Two, remove the random Japanese gacha machines, or fill them with Canadian gacha prizes. Plastic moose, tiny salmon, little bears, etc. Three, hire a front desk till person who is very social and will engage in in-depth conversations with your guests. It will make them feel that their patronage is valued. Four, stock your shops properly. You can easily buy candy in bulk and stock that shop to the brim. As well, stock the ice cream. No point of having and ice cream shop with no ice cream. Five, have an actual menu for your restaurant. It is not that hard to have cooked lunch items that tie into the area, like salmon sandwiches, fish and chips, etc. Six, have a few staff in your gift shop, and instead of having them sit on their phones scrolling and laughing, have them greet anyone who enters, have them knowledgeable about the area, have them engage people. Seven, in your âmuseumâ, hire someone to give mini tours and talk about Hells Gate history. Maybe instead of having people have to go turn on the videos about Hells Gate, have one video play every 20 minutes or so. Walking into a screened room with a dark tv and lights on makes the room look well untouched. And eight? Have some staff walking about the premises, engaging guests around the areas that theyâre near. Have someone on the bridge talking about the tram and bridge, have someone running the gold panning station, have someone by the lookout point talking about the lands history.
Having friendly, engaging staff and stocked shops will increase your ratings highly. Until then? I wish I couldâve given zero stars. At least the...
Read moreI would really like to give this zero stars but I am forced to tick one at least. I have family visiting from abroad and thought this would be a nice day out. To be clear the place and setting is nice but it is now run by different management who do not care about the local community or heritage of the hystorical site and are letting it run down. We live in Canada and we have standards so whoever is running it either needs to be put under pressure by the local government to bring it up to standard or give it to the hands who actually care and does not steal money from people The staff, despite trying to be friendly, hardly spoke any english. The girl had a piece of paper to read from. All they did is laugh when we told them how poor the site was now. The fudge shop was empty and I mean EMPTY. No fudge or anything else of any kind. Overpriced cheap ice cream and that is it. Not sure how long they have not provided fudge but from the looks of it for quite some time. However there was a ridiculous pink machine to get candy floss. The restaurant was closed so you could not buy anything. The staff told me that the shop was selling some sandwiches. The guy did not even know what sandwiches they were selling and the packages had no labels...apparently there were some packaged up burgers too but they could not warm them up. The gift shop had nothing related to the history of the place but tacky overpriced gadgets from China. The museum section was ok but the theatre was not working. When I asked them about it they tried to fix it but then the volume did not work. I had to ask them again and eventually we got sound too. Lack of maintenance and care. The museum sections and shop and gift shop clearly are not warmed up enough as it was cold in there. The staff had to wear jackets as they were cold. They are skimping on heating cost too. Very unpleasant. Nepotism at it best as they only employ their own kind and cannot speak english. The outdoor section had no plants and general lack of care. When talking to the management he did not batter an eye lid. He did not care about anything. I asked for half of my money back and he said NO. I asked if this is the type of customer service they provide and he said YES. So rude and only out to steal our money and not...
Read moreWe drove to Hells Gate, Air Tram from Maple Ridge yesterday (May 20th), two hours maximum through tunnels and bridges. It was raining all the way then became very pleasant when we entered the Hells Gate area.
Somehow our google maps default this location to Boston Bar, BC and we drove passed through it. All for good. Just north of 2 KMâs, we pulled over on the expanded curb and decided to make an U turn. There we saw a beautiful water falls and took few pictures. I think the water falls has water during the rainy season and I will check during summer.
May 20th was Victoria Day holiday and surprisingly the place was not crowded. We got in quickly and took the tram down. It was a breath-taking view. The tram Captain Buenon was all smiling and welcoming.
Once we went down to the small enclave at the other side of the river, we walked through the red bridge (Very similar design of Golden Gate Bridge, SFO). Believe me, we didnât want to come out of it. The Fraser river was raging under the bridge and it makes anyone humble in their mind. It delivers 200 million gallons of water per minute. After clicking some pictures and spent sometime watching the river, we came to the gift shop and bought some souvenirs. Too bad, the restaurant didnât have âHells Gateâ beer in stock on that day.
The gift shop has a nice exhibition that explains about Salmon habitat, Fish pathway and contains other historical information. First time, I came to know that Salmons never drink âFresh Waterâ. They wait until they reach the sea to drink. They also have exhibition about Chinese workers about their hard work towards building rocky mountain rail roads. I just missed to see the haunted stove (next time).
We took the tram and went up.
Just 12 KM south of Air tram location at Route 1, we stopped at Alexandra Lodge (built in 1858) and took some pictures. Then pulled over into Alexandra Bridge (built in 1861) picnic area, had our lunch then walked through a short trail to reach the bridge (10 minutes of walk). A very beautiful bridge that gives you calm look of Fraser River.
Since we live nearby, I canât provide the lodging details and other amenities. However, the best place to stay is either Boston Bar or Hope...
