Although the lake and views are beautiful, I was quite frustrated that the campsites are now taking reservations although it says "first come, first serve" online. We saw a lot of reservation postings. And one group encouraged us to take a site that was reserved from Wednesday to Friday since it was late Thursday evening we did and then they showed up after 9pm wanting the site. Expecting us to take down our camping gear in the dark and hope to find something else. I see from another posting that it also happened that sites were reserved and then the parties don't show up for their reservation dates which means other campers miss out because they aren't a friend of or related to someone who works there, such as the Parks Operator- Shawna Campbell. Not to mention, at a hotel if you don't show up on your reservation date they give your room to someone else. To have to set up camp twice when we had shown up on a Thursday to beat the weekend rush was challenging. Also the outhouses were sub-par and there was no one selling firewood so thankfully we brought some...
Read moreBeautiful place that I've been visiting for years. I give 5 stars for the scenery of the area, but the condition of the squakum campground is terrible. The last time I visited was in september, I noticed that the first nation people of the area are charging fees for camping which is not unfair. BUT if campers need to pay a fee to camp there, then the site should be taken care of and cleaned much more thoroughly. There was broken glass and garbage absolutely everywhere.
I understand it is up to campers to clean up after themselves and leave the area as it was. I would gladly pick up the garbage and clean the areas myself, and I do as much as I can while I visit. But I'm not going to pay for my campsite, while also cleaning up...
