Highly recommended! I was there 7 days on a solo, SUV camping trip with no issue. The trip during the last 2 weeks of May was Awesome. My return to Vancouver took 2 days and included Stunning views of Mt. Robson (2.5 hrs/Hwy 5) and the Columbia Ice-field (add 2 hrs Hwy 5 to 16 to 93). The weather was fantastic the entire time (not too hot or cold) and Nature was everywhere. The pictures include Wells Grey, Mt. Robson and the wildlife from Wells Grey to the Columbia ice field. If you've got a good eye, finding a hidden no pay spot for the night in wells Grey or along the route taken above, was not a problem. There are also many inexpensive camp grounds, in and around the park and on the way to the ice field. Make sure you bring cash, as the Dropbox Honor System is used. If you don't have food & drink before entering Wells Grey park, get it at the Save-on-foods, across from Tim Horton's. Repeat food run again if heading to Mt. Robson/Columbia Glacier. The water falls in Wells Grey are numerous and all worth the visit. Some have easy access with short walk to viewing area's. Others require more of a hike, but well worth it. South rim of Helmicken is a nice long hike, but the view of the falls from that side is sporadic, peek a boo through brush and trees. Tough picture taking from that side. Had two different bear sightings on the trails in the park during hikes. They seemed more interested in the spring plants and sweet grass, then me. However, I was wearing a bear bell and had spray (not mosquito ; ) This is the wilderness so be prepared. Bug spray, good hiking boots are a bonus, bring some rain gear so you can walk behind Moul falls. After 7 days hiking the park & before leaving the park and town of Clearwater the next morning, I went to the Hop "N" Hog Tap & Smokehouse selected the BBQ combo plate which was mighty tasty. I will add names and more details later.....
Read moreDo not book unless you are dead set on going here. Do not book in advance. Especially during the summer time (aka forest fire season).
Their cancellation policy is harsh and uncompromising. You must pay full price if you opt to cancel your trip unless the Wells Grey or Clearwater area is destroyed by a forest fire. If everywhere else is actively burning with Wells Grey itself being miraculously untouched, well, I guess you'll have to wind your way across every road in the parts of the Rockies that aren't burning to make your way in.
We booked in winter well before the fires started. We now have to drive 11 hours to bypass Jasper which was recently destroyed in that disastrous 2024 fire. We are very concerned about going and don't want to get trapped there by the fires. Due to the high prices (~$1000 per person), we find ourselves trapped in a trip we don't want to go on and don't feel safe going to.
If we want to stay away from BC forest fires, don't book yourself in here.
We will not be booking next year. Hopefully we aren't going to be evacuated.
Best advice is to keep an eye out for last minute cancellations and book in at the last minute when things are (hopefully)...
Read moreI went with my family to Wells Grey park at the end of August and stayed by Clearwater lake right beside Osprey falls. Most mosquitos were gone this time of year. The 30 km of dirt road was a little bumpy in some sections but very good for the most part. Any car could make it. We stayed 5 nights. It was just the right amount of time to see most of the waterfalls and spend 1 day on a jetboat to go up past the start of Clearwater Lake, up river, and to the start of Azure Lake where Rainbow falls is. You can book this tour from the cafe at Clearwater campground. It was probably the highlight of our time there. We would like to go back and paddle to some of the dozen locations along these 2 lakes where they have multiple campsites set up for boat access only. If you don't want to paddle both ways, you can hire the jetboat to take you one way and just paddle back. (Probably about 2...
