A 2 1/2 hour drive from Victoria will take you to one of Vancouver Island's most interesting historical sites, the McLean Mill. What makes the McLean Mill such a unique heritage treasure is that much of the original machinery and buildings have survived making it a rare example of a sawmill complex from the early days of mechanized logging on the west coast. Even more remarkable is that the sawmill has been restored to full working condition, the millpond and dam have been reconstructed and the companies original steam donkey is also operating along with a fully rigged ‘spar tree’ for pulling in cut logs and loading onto trucks. You can see how an early 20th century logging and milling operation actually worked! This is a spectacular site to explore. If you want an even cooler experience, take the steam train ride to the mill from...

Had a great day with the family today, taking the train from Port Alberni to McLean Mill and back. I hadn't even realized there was a standard-gauge railway still in existence on Vancouver Island, and I've lived here for 20 years! Both steam locomotives are currently out of service, needing a cash infusion of $180,000 for repairs, but we were delivered to the Mill by a 1954 diesel-electric engine, with the noisiest, most delightful tappets. By taking the train, you are only afforded less than three hours on the Mill site, and I could have used more. Will have to go back. Fascinating machinery and a real step...

What an unexpected excellent day... We thought it was closed but figured we'd see whatever we could, scoping it out for the next time. Perfect outdoor activity for any bubble group or family. The kids will run themselves out and the historical depth, well kept grounds, delightful staff and supremely curated pieces both large and small will keep everyone thoroughly engaged. I found myself in awe of how cleverly our ancestors and early pioneers were able to invent creative fixes and tools to satisfy their productivity needs. No charge admission but an old train or bus fare collection box is available...

Absolutely beautiful in the fall! Saw some river offers in the logging pond. Lots of trails to walk around, educational plaques everywhere. The site is right in the middle of a forest with the mountain in the backdrop. Very interesting for those interested in history. Highly recommend! Free admission for self guided tour, trails are open and can see almost everything. Went on Wednesday in October and it was pretty much completely empty. Not staffed during the week, meaning the bathrooms and gift shop are closed. They are only open Saturdays and Sundays. Lots of parking available. Many picnic tables.

Gorgeous. Having the prep area right next to the hall was a bit disruptive during parts of our seminar. Breakfast, lunch and snacks were good. Buffet was kept refreshed. The grounds were amazing. It was raining so a collection of umbrellas were provided so we could wander comfortably. Wonderful peaceful historical grounds. I imagine it would host beautiful weddings:)

Lovely place! Very instructive and fascinating for those who don't know much of the wood industry of last century. People there are very kind and you can feel their passion. The site is very well organized, well equiped and clean. Trails are very pleasant and both kids and parents can enjoy the site as it is well secured yet quite authentic.
