We made it a point to include this place as a stop on our road trip through BC and some of Alberta last week. I love this place. I was hesitant based on some past reviews but honestly this place is just a delight. We like heritage villages and ghost towns, so for us, this is right up our alley. We spent the afternoon here on Sept 1st and i want to highlight some positives and some suggestions just based on other heritage villages i have spent time in. First--it's bigger than you think. You need a few hours here to explore everything properly. The theatre is adorable. First, it is air conditioned, which is great when it was 40 degrees out in the sun but they had an actual picture playing and you could buy candy and popcorn from the period actor who is friendly and knowledgeable. thank you for selling me my Swedish Fish i cant find on Vancouver Island anymore! lol Ms. McBride in the Lambi House had fresh baked cookies on the counter and you just wanted to sit at the table in live in that cabin. Every detail is paid attention to--the dried herbs from the ceiling, the 1800s stove still functioning, the laundry hanging outside... There is no more train, which we knew going in, but the train station is just fabulous and man it must have been such a delight when it was running because it almost feels like you're stepping in an 1800s station to purchase a ticket and catch a train. my suggestion here is open the ticket booth and put a mannequin or something, like make a display out of it, rather than just closing the building. Also, if the train is never returning due to cost and safety reasons (they aren't cheap to maintain, i know), then perhaps get an old train car on the tracks and allow people to walk through. I've been to a couple sites that have these old cars and it might really add to that area. there were no carriage rides, because the barn or the carriage were under maintenance? Which was fine, because it was so hot, I'm not sure the horses should be out pulling people anyways. This is my only criticism: give the sheep some water and some shade. The horses were getting sprayed down when we were there and i know you cant do that to sheep because of their wool--but i didn't see a trough of water for them and they were all under the one tree trying to get shade heavily breathing. I know they are getting sheered shortly because it's been so hot, but put some stakes in the ground and hang some sun shades/sails so they have more space since being in their hut--would certainly bake them. The restaurant gave lots of options and was quite good. Beautiful shaded patio. The bakery was closed which made me sad but honestly thats just because i want access to every single building in these villages--i just love them that much! The school house--oh man what a delight. Mrs. Taenhauser rang the bell for the school house lesson and treated us troublesome bunch just like kids in the 1800s. Lining up outside the school house, from sitting in desks, to the hygiene check and then came the spelling of words in cursive. I was a problem and got sent to the corner of the blackboard having to put my nose in the circle and then got a ridiculously hard word to write in cursive on the board in front of the rest of the class. How this lady never broke character while I'm up there just laughing uncontrollably in the corner--I'll never know. LOVED IT! If our next adventure takes us this way, i would definitely make another stop. Thank you for a...

This place lies on the east shore of the East Kootenay River Between the Mouth the St. Mary River and Wild Horse 🐎 River. I had a lot of fun and insights about how things were from as far as 100 years ago.

Firstly, the horse ride in the wagon was awesome 😎, I saw in the the museum old clothes made my tailors and some tools ⚒️ 🧰 for technical and vocational use.

Secondly, The bakery which is also know as “City Bakery-Confectionery was built in 1922 it’s Proprietor called Mrs. Underhill I learnt was still in operation, and she bakes one of the best pastries 🥮,I had a bite when I bought a blueberry 🫐 muffin and a cookie 🍪 at the cafeteria.it was really good,if you want to learn how to bake I’m told she trains people who are interested in baking, for more enquiries on that call the number on their website or ask from the building. Furthermore, The Perry Creek Water wheel 🛞 was amazingly beautiful 🤩 to see, the wheel was very huge, right after that I walked past the gold mine, I saw the equipment used to wash the gold. One of the things that fascinated me was the fact that they used to sell candies in the drug store 🏬,I couldn’t believe my eyes but there it was sitting right there in the bottles, I walked the hall downstairs where shows used to be held , right ahead of me I saw a little garden 🪴 with a poultry farm, fowls looked really healthy, there were spring onions 🧅 were really big , I immediately thought of making a salad just at the sight it. Lastly I saw those old Churches ⛪️ one was an Anglican Church, it was really cute , I think the green and cream was a good combination. I love how I got to know and see for myself how things were in operation from from...

Update Sept 4/23: Trudy from Fort Steele contacted me to address my concerns. She dealt with me very professionally and an appropriate resolve was made. Greatly appreciated the phone call and resolve. Thank you Trudy.

We attended on Friday August 25, 2023 at 9:30 am. We paid admission fee of $25.00 per adult. Our plan was to walk around and then take the train, as advertised on the website. My daughter and granddaughter travelled from out of town to do this. When we stopped at the bakery, I noticed a sign posting the fee for an adult to take the train at $20.00. A bit surprised at the additional cost, we asked at the front entrance where to get the train. I was then advised that the train was out of service. There was no indication anywhere that the train was not running that day. We left after a short walk within the complex, no train ride, and a disappointing experience overall. Fort Steele used to be a one price ticket and a fantastic place to spend a day for a family. I’m sorry to see customer service has gone to this level. I’ve requested a phone call from management regarding...

Beautiful little spot to stop with your little ones or anyone super keen on the old wild west. Amazing learning opportunity for people to learn a lot of history about kootneys, and it's gold mining days. The folks are amazingly sweet, and even when it's not in full blown season(summer), there's still so much to see and enjoy. There's horses, and a whole lot of other wildlife around to see as well while walking the paths. Their gift shop is quite cute and has many little trinkets and gifts to bring home. I cannot wait to come back and explore a bit more during the summer, and I hope you all continue making this piece of history officially outstanding and just overall enthralling to enjoy and see. If you really like museums and walking, this is literally a perfect place to be.

I had no idea how cool this heritage park would be but was blown away with what we found. On assignment to capture some images for the region we made a stop at Fort Steele. The town is a step back in time with incredible detailed and well preserved history from staff dressed in character clothing and jobs around town to the collection of antiques. The location along the banks of the Kootenay river on a plateau looking across the valley is scenic. Especially with Fisher Peak and the Steeples towering in the distance overlooking the Fort. Access is very easy right off the highway only minutes from Cranbrook. The kids will also love all the farm animals throughout the property. Of course the ice cream in the gift shop and main building cafe is a treat to end your visit.
