We were transiting through the area in a kayak on our way to our next campsite and were ignorant of the rules, so I thought I'd share them here! The boundaries of the reserve are marked by two white signs on shore. When between them stay at least 0.5 nautical miles from shore (~1 km). Also, try to keep at least 200 meters from the resident orcas and 100 meters from other marine life (although that's easier said than done when you're in a slow-moving kayak and the wildlife decides to detour straight at you). We were paddling on a rainy day into a headwind opposite the current (which creates chop) so for people in a similar situation I recommend planning your route to hug the opposite shore if possible. Am so pleased that this reserve is being protected and especially pleased that the tour companies are so invested in protecting this area by closely following all the rules. We shut off the boat and the whales swam by! At all costs they must be allowed to prosper and return with their families...
