My fave lake on the North Island because it's not usually busy, and because of the 6000+ft Rugged mountains that surrounds this 5km lake. It's just breathe taking! Plus the amount of wildlife is phenomenal! Cougars, elk, bears, wolves, otters, owls, toads, all kinds of birds and fish. It's just one of a kind. However getting to the lake is not fun, it's a long rough, unmaintained road with lots of logs and overgrown bushes that will rub up against your vehicle and scratch it. Also this lake it 1,400ft above sea level so it gets fairly chilly at night and the water is cold but it's soooo beautiful!!! 100% must see!!
Ps: you can also pack some camping gear into your kayak or canoe and paddle out to a different beach, you don't have to stay at the rec site. There's lots of beaches along the lake to get away from people, since there's only a few camping spots. Me and my bf always take our boat and go to the end, best views...

There is a small beach but the view is amazing. Water looks clear and is definitely swimmable. Was told by some others there that if you boat around the lake there are more remote spots. Definitely something to try another time and there...
