The Elk Thurston trail is a challenging 17-kilometer (10.6-mile) out-and-back hike with an elevation gain of 1,175 meters (3,855 feet) near Chilliwack, British Columbia. It offers stunning views of the Fraser Valley and surrounding mountains. There is a designated parking area at the trailhead, which can get crowded on weekends. The hike can be split into two sections: The ascent to Elk Mountain: This is a steep 5.1-kilometer (3.2-mile) climb through the forest with an elevation gain of 810 meters (2,650 feet). The trail is well-maintained and easy to follow. The onward trek to Thurston Peak: This is a less traveled 4-kilometer (2.5-mile) section with some elevation gain and loss along a ridge with exposed rock sections. Microspikes are recommended for snowy conditions. The views from Thurston Peak are even more spectacular than those from Elk Mountain. Overall, the Elk Thurston trail is a great option for experienced hikers who are looking for a challenge. Just be sure to be prepared for the weather conditions and to bring plenty of...

It was our first time and we've come across a few other people along the way who were there the first time and never made it to the top, we only just barely made it too, and the only reason I know is because the way down isn't much easier in winter, so everyone was cautiously slow.
You can make it up without crampons, as long as you have suitable decent footwear, but they will make it much easier along with sticks. Going down, you will definitely appreciate that extra grip though. Without the crampons/cleats/spikes, sliding around and occasional slip and fall on your backside is...
ย ย ย Read moreElk Mountain hike is a good idea for a family weekend. The trail is not easy, but does not need special preparation. It is not very difficult for children. The trail mostly is wild and in the shadow of tallest trees. Only the last few kilometers are steep. The top of Elk Mountain offers a spectacular view of Chilliwack, Cultus lake and the surrounding Fraser Valley area - you may get beautiful family photo. It is a good place for picnic. It will be interesting for all to see chipmunks and blue birds in the wild nature on the top. So, if you will have comfortable clothes, a lot of water and feed not only for you, but for chipmunks too) you will have a lot of fun time there with...
