This is the southern-most point in mainland Canada. (The southern-most point in Canada is is just to the west on Cape Sable Island. (Another great side trip.)) You can see the Cape Sable Island lighthouse to the west and the Salvages lighthouse to the east. This is a worthwhile 20 km side trip from the Lighthouse Route. Coming from the north-east, navigate to it from Clyde River. From the west, navigate from Barrington. Then, to return, navigate to the other one. It was the site of a LORAN station. A secret system which helped our ships navigate during WWII. (Check it on Wikipedia.) After the war there was also a "Pine Tree Line" station to warn the US of incoming Russian bombers. (Again: Wikipedia.) That site is now a weather radar.

The fog starts coming in when we arrive; I visited this lighthouse numerous times because hardly anybody comes here. Great for a picnic while listening to the ocean waves! Watch for dog poop, I stepped in next to the picnic table. I wish individuals would pick up after their pets. There are garbage bins and toilet potties in the area.

If you love lighthouses, this one is definitely worth a stop as it's one of the few we've been to that has a parking space and is easy to access. Not to mention it also has a great view. A beautiful lighthouse that's well maintained and evocative of the Maritimes.

I think we need to build a walking/biking path around the marsh there because it's beautiful but most people just drive to the lighthouse, idle their vehicle, and leave without even getting out. Get out and feel the sea spray on your face! Feel the waves! Look off both shores, it looks different to the left and the right. Come for the sunsets, they're remarkable. The only time it's not so great is when the men who can afford too much ammunition get out and shoot at ducks. That's too bad But it's glorious the rest of the year. We also have a really beautiful-sounding fog horn, so even if you can't see very far in Baccaro, it still SOuNDS wonderful, and the air will kiss your face. One time a man from Halifax got out of his truck and came over to me (I spend a lot of time there) and asked me "What is the name of this wondrous place?" Bring a picnic. Stay awhile. Relax and turn off your engine and your lights, please, so we can enjoy the sound and smell...
