A TRULY delightful place to visit, within a few minutes' drive from Halifax proper. This was one of the main fortifications protecting the city right up to WWI, and has some SPLENDID restoration work, as well as a mysterious closed-off place which may or may not house the entrance to a tunnel out to McNab;s Island. Has a high-power coin-operated telescope which you can use to see Eastern Passage, the island and more. The whole place just REEKS of pure adventure, and i used to go there a lot on my bicycle. Down the road a bit, on the shoreline, are some neglected forts which were used by the notorious 13 Tribe as a sort of secret clubhouse in the 1960s. Whole place is WELL worth visiting more than once, especially for families - but in reality, anyone with an ounce of adventurous spirit should go there at least once, if they are in the Halifax area more...

A great place to go for a stroll! I came for the historic sites, I stayed for the beautiful walk by the water, surrounded by forest. Walking right up and into historic sites was amazing, but a little sad to see how graffiti had taken them over. Some areas had more thoughtful art pieces and those make a lot more sense than just the endless mediocre tags. But overall, the graffiti lended well to the vibe and it showed the disrepair the decades had left. I saw many people with their dogs out, so feel free to bring furry friends. I was only visiting, so I didn't have my dog with me to bring him, but I'm sure he would...

While this was an interesting historical place go visit, and some beautiful views of the city, the opposite shoreline and sailboats on the water when we were there, it isn't the most wheelchair accessible place. The trails throughout were gravelled, but the gravel was too course for the wheelchair. The wheels would "rut" in and catch on the stones, almost sending our brother "overboard" a few times. I'm assuming the hard pack washed away in the recent storms and this stone was a repair job, but travellers beware, if you have don't have someone able bodied to push, you may wind up stuck or tumbled over in...

I first stumbled upon the hidden gem of York Redoubt many years ago when living in Halifax. During that time it was one of my favorite places to take friends visiting from out of province. A great way to explore history with less crowds and more at your own pace. My most recent trip was a return after too many years. I ventured there with a friend and our kids. The children loved exploring all the tunnels and hidden buildings. There is so much more to see but it is a lot of walking for little legs. The highlight was all the big cannons that were still around and secret passageways. We will be back for sure!

This place will be open from mid June to Labour Day, there will be no winter maintenance. There is a bus stop near by bus no 415 you need to take in case you want to come here by bus. There is a good place to walk with your dogs, family and friends. There are some tunnels and cannon. The scenic view is beautiful from top lots of water and when the Sun-rays kisses the water it shines like diamond. The trail is not big hardly 2-3 km. It will end on the Navel school from one side and you need to take the same route to come back. Someone also told us there is a place where to teaches you how to burn campfire.

Such a great little walk around a beautiful slice of history; it's a loop, so you can start from one side and work your way around to take in the whole fort. The view from the wall over the water is spectacular and we were told by a gentleman who frequents the fort that the sunsets are phenomenal 🌅 The fort isn't open to the public after 8 PM, parking is permitted within the walls so long as you vacate by the time the gate closes at 8 PM and additional parking is available in the gravel leading up to the fort if it happens to be a busy day.
