An absolutely beautiful spot to take a rest, picnic or swim. Gander lake is the city’s water source for drinking and just below the silent witness memorial you reach the lake. It is such clean tasting water- not that I drank the lake water but when swimming it was on my lips and it just was odorless and tasteless- pure. I camped here a few nights. Was able to set up my propane bbq and had food. There is ONE picnic table by the lake - another one looks like it was carried up and brought to the trail because there is another trail- that is right off the beach area. It is all stone so water shoes are essential.

Great place for dogs to cool off. People kayak and paddle board here too. Just a lovely refreshing spot. Water is NOT warm- but also not ice cold....

Google maps was a little off on the distance, add 200 m. It was a bright, cool, windy day when I visited the site.

There is the main memorial that lists the names of those who perished, a surprising number 😔. I did find a cross and some american flags just up the rise. I dont think its an official part of it, but nice.

Further down the road there is a 20ft spire with a cross on the top of it. No inscriptions so Im not sure if this was olaced at the same time or if there were multiple monuments put together over time.

The statue depiction of a soldier and children holding hands is nicely done, some fine craftsmanship. I have to admit I did feel a little creeped out and got a bit of a shiver...

You don't generally go looking for aviation crash memorials on vacation, but since we were in Gander on 9/11, it seemed fitting to pay respects to those lives lost in what was the biggest air disaster in Canadian history at the time. This memorial is very close to the airport - don't be alarmed that it is down a gravel road that also leads to the local gun range. This peaceful and beautifully kept memorial tells the story of the 256 individuals who lost their lives on December 12, 1985 in the...

A quick but interesting stop about a tragic plane crash that killed 256 American soldiers - most from the 101st Airborne. The soldiers were on their way back from a tour in Egypt and had stopped to refuel. The plane crashed just after take off and exploded. The cause was deemed to be ice on the wings though a minority report was filed by some of the investigators saying that it was caused by an explosion on board the plane.
