From their massive, vibrant pumpkins to homemade sweets and preserves, Strom’s Farm and Bakery just outside Guelph never fails to impress! Every autumn for years now, our family has been making the drive from Niagara to Guelph to stock up on pumpkins for the season and pick up a dozen or more of Amy Strom’s legendary butter tarts.
You’ve probably read many reviews about other bakeries making similar claims, but as an Ontario Butter Tart Festival judge, and someone whose family goes back five generations in Canada, I can confidently say that Amy Strom’s butter tarts deserve gold on the “Canadian Olympics of Butter Tarts” podium (if there were such a thing— and I have to wonder why there isn’t!). 🤔 Her butter tarts are simply unbeatable! The crust is a buttery, flaky masterpiece and the filling is never too sweet, because thankfully Amy doesn’t use corn syrup in her filling, which means the filling stays in the tart as you’re eating it and doesn’t dribble all over the place after that first bite.
And if I didn’t have enough to rave about in this review already, Strom’s now cultivates their own Haskap berries! If you’re unfamiliar with this little east coast gem, Haskap berries are like a delicious cross between blueberries and elderberries, with antioxidant properties that are off the chart. We snagged a bottle of their Haskap berry vinaigrette, which took our spinach, pear, and goat cheese salad that evening to a whole new level.
And to top it all off, Amy created a Haskap berry butter tart that was so incredible we devoured it before we left the parking lot! As I mentioned previously, I grew up in a family steeped in Canadian traditions and am a staunch believer that a real butter tart must adhere to the original recipe, first mentioned in Royal Victoria Cook Book in 1900; which again doesn’t call for corn syrup. To me, there should only ever be three types of butter tarts (plain, raisin, or pecan), however this was a delightful twist on a classic, and I was thrilled beyond words to try it!
If you're looking for perfect pumpkins, a wide variety of gourds for decorating, or the absolute best butter tarts in Ontario, Strom’s Farm and Bakery is the place. Their staff are warm, welcoming, and incredibly helpful and friendly. A trip to Strom’s is an adventure for the whole...
Read moreAWESOME family night at the Strom's Night Maze last night! We lucked into mild weather and clear skies with a gorgeous Moon to add to the incredible atmosphere. The entire property is beautifully maintained and has an assortment of activities for every age. The new rope & swing structure was so much fun, I could have stayed there all night. The "kids" beat us at completing the maze as we tried desperately to find all the stations - that was pleasantly more challenging than we expected. I was also beat at the unique game of Bumble Bee Guess Who. The ingenuity of the new entertainment features is something you have to experience and really makes returning year after year worthwhile. Tried our first "Butter Tart Beer" and will be back for more for sure, another surprise. The staff is knowledgeable and friendly, to say the least. Sitting around the spacious seating at the fire pits with complete strangers was also very comfortable as we played games of Giant Jenga. Came home and devoured a delicious pumpkin pie purchased earlier in the day from the Bakery. Honestly thinking about going back tonight before they close on Sunday for the season. Thank you to the entire Strom's Team for a family night we won't soon forget! Special memories...
Read moreWhen we arrived, the employee asked us if it was our first time there and we said yes.
She then informed us that there was a fee, which was $20.50 per person. This is very steep considering what the grounds actually offered. I would personally go to other farms where the entrance fees are lower, where they offer much more, and where the farms upkeep are much nicer.
After the fact, we learned that you didn’t need to pay to go to the bakery and buy pumpkins, which is actually all we wanted to do since our baby is only 10 months old and couldn’t participate in any of the activities.
At the end of the day, we paid $70 for three adults and a baby just to walk around for 20 minutes. It is partly our fault for not looking into it ourselves, but we are disappointed that the employee did not explain this to us because she did ask if it was our first time. Had we known, we would not have paid to go through that one section and just went to...
