The Arboretum at the University of Guelph is a remarkable 165-hectare living museum and natural oasis. Established in 1970, it serves as both a research facility and a public garden, showcasing a diverse collection of plant species and ecosystems. The Arboretum is home to over 2,000 species of trees, shrubs, and herbaceous plants, making it a valuable resource for botanical studies and a beautiful place for visitors to explore.
One of the Arboretum's key features is its extensive collection of native plants, which are cultivated in specialized gardens to preserve and display the region's natural heritage. The Native Trees of Ontario Collection, for example, highlights the province's diverse tree species, offering a living reference for researchers and educators.
In addition to its botanical treasures, the Arboretum includes a variety of habitats, such as woodlands, wetlands, and meadows, which support a rich array of wildlife. Birdwatchers, in particular, are drawn to the Arboretum for its numerous avian species, including migratory and resident birds.
The Arboretum also serves as an educational hub, offering workshops, guided tours, and public programs that promote environmental awareness and sustainable practices. Its role as a research center is enhanced by partnerships with the University of Guelph's academic departments, contributing to studies in ecology, horticulture, and conservation.
Overall, The Arboretum is a cherished green space that combines education, conservation, and recreation, providing a serene environment for both study...

It is such a calming place. The paths are mostly smooth and wheelchair accessible. They don't want people jogging. It was on one of their signs. The Arboretum is free.
Walking Time: If you walk the straight path from one end to the other, it is about 7 minutes walking time. If you take the side parallel meandering path, it is a 9 minute walk one way. There are other paths through a pond area. I'm not sure how long those are but are likely only slightly longer.
Education: They have signs throughout the Arboretum teaching about plant life and tree species. See my pics.
Dog friendliness: Yes, people walk their dogs here. Dogs have to be leashed. See my pics.
Parking: It is free and there is a washroom right across from it in a big building if you enter through the College Ave. entrance. See my pics for more details.
Opening hours: From dawn until...
ย ย ย Read moreAs a wedding photographer, I recently had the pleasure of capturing this couples engagement session at The Arboretum. This is one of my favourite locations for engagement sessions, and I look forward to capturing photos here every single time.
There is such a great variety of locations, all of which are easily accessible by trails or walkways. There are so many spaces that I am always able to find a private space for my couples. I love the variety of trees, especially the field of grass during sunset is absolutely magical! Also if the Japanese garden is open, itโs a great spot as well.
Overall, the engagement session was a memorable experience for both the couple and myself. The fall season added an extra layer of beauty to the already stunning park, and Iโm grateful for the opportunity to capture such a special moment in their lives. For anyone looking for a unique and breathtaking setting for their engagement photos, donโt even...
