What a blast - literally! I've been wanting to see the ruins for a few years ever since we moved to Northern Ontario, but 'things' got in the way, and I was finally good to go. And not a single disappointment. The static displays in the museum portion in the main building were well laid out, there was even a semi-interactive display using a screen display that would have probably been buttons in a previous era (ok, so i haven't been to anything like this for yeeeeeaaaarsss). The ruins had plaques which went into details of the fort structures or buildings they once were, but keep in mind when you go here these remains are only a tiny fraction of what once stood here all along the shoreline during trading and the British-American war for territories (Canada). Anyway, the rest I'll leave to the EXCELLENT folks who work here, they each had their expertise and made the entire experience so much fun for us. Best of all (albeit at an extra expense above admission & perfect timing for when we happened to arrive), my husband was able to participate in the "Musket Experience", and for that alone I would have already recommended a visit to the Fort St. Joseph site, but again each costumed interpreter there made it feel like we could almost visualise how it was 200+ years ago when the area was bustling with trade activity or even a little warfare. There is a trail network in this park, walking amongst the ruins is self-guided, there are live demonstrations at specific time of the day, and everything at this site is well taken care of. If you find yourself on St. Joe's Island, don't miss this place!
NOTE: This is a seasonal park (OPEN June 1 – September 30, Wednesday - Sunday 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m, and CLOSED October 1 – May...
Read moreWe lucked out. Arrived at 1045 and were the only guests. They happily stored our motorcycle gear and let us know abot the musket demo at 1130. Docents Mike and Jordan were over-the-top fantastic. Gave us so much detail about the fort but also how people lived. Got intersting details on the two different muskets. Mike even changed flints in the flintlock, showing the differences between English and French flints. Jordan fired her musket with precision and then proceeded to show us the different furs on display, noting subtle diffences. She showed us her work-in-progress Metis sash. Such talent.
Would have given a 5 but the 3.2 km driveway is now gravel, unlike 6 years ago ahen we...
