Completely shocked to see the location these animals are suffering at. In a country I thought was far more progressive than caging sentient beings in a space so small, it’s unacceptable. And the clear nearby sanctuary solution is outlined below:
Boogie is a Japanese macaque confined at Bervie Zoo in Kincardine, Ontario. For years, he has suffered in a small, barren enclosure, exhibiting severe signs of mental distress, including pacing, spinning in circles, and biting himself. When footage of Boogie pacing and self-harming appeared on CTV’s W5 in 2022, an animal welfare expert noted that this type of behaviour is typically due to a lifetime of poor welfare.
Animal Justice has documented Boogie’s suffering for three consecutive summers, and despite multiple legal complaints to animal law enforcement, Boogie remains in the same dire conditions.
Please ensure that Animal Welfare Services takes swift action to remove Boogie from Bervie Zoo and arrange to send him to an appropriate facility like Story Book Farm Primate Sanctuary in Sunderland, Ontario. This sanctuary is equipped to provide the care and environment that Boogie desperately needs. As you are likely aware, Bervie Zoo has a history of non-compliance with animal welfare laws. AWS already seized dozens of animals from the roadside zoo in 2022—including an olive baboon who now lives at Story Book—and faces 21 outstanding charges related to the poor conditions these animals were kept in.
Boogie’s continued confinement is unacceptable, and I urge you to prioritize his well-being by ensuring his safe transfer to a sanctuary where he can live out the rest of his life in peace and with the...

I recently visited Bervie Zoo and it was one of the worst experiences I’ve ever had at an animal facility. Many of the animals had visible cuts with flies covering them. The lions looked depressed, pacing or lying lifeless in cages far too small for their size. The bears had severely overgrown, matted fur and nothing in their enclosure to scratch or groom themselves on — it looked like they hadn’t been brushed in years.
There was even a beautiful monkey locked up all alone in a small cage, which is completely unacceptable for such a social animal. Every enclosure seemed neglected and barren, in some way. It was heartbreaking to see animals living in such poor, inhumane conditions.
This is not a real zoo — it’s animal neglect on display. I left feeling sad, disgusted, and ashamed I had given them any support. Please don’t waste your money here and don’t support the suffering of these animals.
Also the tour guide knows nothing. Maybe don’t advertise a tour guide if they don’t even have any informational facts or know anything about the animals other than a couple things they memorized.
You guys are charging was too much for what you are offering to customers AND the animals. Shame shame. I swear all the lions looked so depressed i didn’t want to walk away. It was all in their eyes. If you come here please bring lots of treats for the animals who cares about the rules atleast make their living hell a...
Read moreSo much potential. The property is large and spacious for animal enclosures. Whether the pens meet the size standards, I don't think the Lions, Tigers and Gator will agree...some enclosures seemed generous while others seemed too small. The land appears to be left to grow naturally, which is lovely, however, it does appear to be unkept and overgrown; I highly recommend cleaning up the piles of scrap equipment and putting some money and labour into the curbside appeal. Our family of 10 enjoyed our visit last week, it was $144.00 and felt that was fair as we know the care for the animals is expensive. Having said that, given the 30+ years we were told it has been open, it would be nice to see some improvements...
