We just got back from vacation. We are from Ontario and we were in Prince Edward Island for 9 days on the east coast of the island and did a lot of tutoring and visited a lot of beaches. My son and I could not get enough of basin head. It's like nothing I've ever experienced coming from Ontario born and raised with no ocean. They have a man-made Channel that feeds the basin and the riptide flows through this channel with a super fast current and you jump in off the ledge of the pier and they Riptide sucks you out to the ocean when you getting to low tide and apparently at high tide the riptide is going in the opposite direction and it will suck you into the Basin if you jump in from the Oceanside. The water is crystal clear and the water is also very shallow so there's no need to worry about little kids plus there are lifeguards everywhere. I jumped in with my two year old and 6 year old who were both wearing life jackets but you can just kind of enjoy yourself and it is like a natural lazy river. The beaches were completely clean and there are areas that you can just relax on the shore or you can get bombarded with rip curl's for about the first 30 or 40 feet then once you go past that it's nice and calm and you can kind of bounce with the waves like you were in a wave pool. There are sandbars all the way out and you can see people over a hundred feet out and water that's up to their waist or knees depending on the tide level. If you're ever visiting Prince Edward Island you need to go to Basin head and the locals will tell you how amazing it is as well. If you want a history lesson with your awesome beach day there's lots of information and visitor stuff to educate yourself on the history of the Basin as it used to and still always changes and the openings to the ocean from the basin have come and gone and moved around in the past 200 or so years. There's also ice cream and gift shops in a restaurant and tons of...
Read moreThis is definitely the highlight for our trip to PEI and Nova Scotia so far. Singing part is, of course, nice but really just wave hitting the shallow sand beach, which we experienced elsewhere before. I am more impressed by the relatively deep strip of water, between the shore and another shallow strip further into ocean, making it perfect to swim safely. Further, more marine life were slighted, especially near the rock cliff, like we saw one baby turtle, many crabs and jelly fishes, which is really surprising. And finally, the unique place to jump into the fast flowing river into the ocean. There are lifeguards there watching, though jumping is not on park' official activity menu: you do that on your own risk. Be careful when you choose to climb out thru the ladder. It is, however, lots of fun and all free! And the little cafe is also a pleasant surprise, as it had some really good potato fries and Haddock and other seafood, all...
Read moreMy family and I (group of 7 adults) came to visit Basin Head on Sunday August 14, 2022. We are from Ontario. This was our last full day in PEI so it was nice to see and it was definitely beautiful, but it’s similar to any other beach. This area is quite secluded. Not much but farmland on your way there and back (we came from Charlottetown). There isn’t really any restaurants around except in Souris so I’d recommend eating there before the beach if you’re a big hungry group! Or bring a lunch/snacks!
The sand squeaks when you stomp hard on it but that’s it! I was hoping it would sound more like the “singing” it had its name for. Some of us jumped off the bridge which was cool but the water coming through is quite strong! Overall not bad and definitely...
