If you’re walking to the dunes take double the water you think you need. I took both trails and you are not missing much by taking the shorter loop. There’s lots of cacti to see on that loop and it’s much more sandy of a trail. The dunes are really cool. I went really early in the am late July. Watch out for some ground surface wasps. You can see where they are borrowing and avoid them easily but just a heads up if once you get to the loose dune and kids went running through it. I was solo so I heard them n easily picked paths to avoid on the huge open surface of the dunes. Loved the blooming flowers n seeing the dune slowly eating the forest was really cool.
