If you're anywhere near Guelph or the Greater Toronto Area and looking for a unique day trip, the Halton County Radial Railway 🚃 🚉🚂🚇🛤️🚋 is an absolute must-visit. Tucked away in the countryside, this working museum offers a rare chance to ride historic streetcars and interurban rail vehicles on a scenic 2-kilometre stretch of track — and it's all run by passionate volunteers who really know their stuff.
The collection is impressive. From beautifully restored TTC streetcars to vintage electric locomotives, everything is presented with care and authenticity. You can actually board many of the vehicles and ride them, which is a huge hit for kids and train enthusiasts alike. The main station has a small but well-curated museum area and gift shop, and the maintenance barns are open for visitors to walk through and get a behind-the-scenes look. There’s also a charming picnic area surrounded by nature — it’s very peaceful and a great spot to relax between streetcar rides.
👉🏻What stood out: Authentic, working vintage streetcars Knowledgeable and friendly volunteers Hands-on and family-friendly Beautiful rural setting, especially in the fall
👉🏻Things to keep in mind: The facility is mostly outdoors, so dress for the weather Some areas aren’t wheelchair-accessible It’s a seasonal attraction ⏱️⌚️(check hours before you go)
💡Visitor Suggestions to HCRR — Your Magnet Selection! As a guest, one thing I (and many others) would love to see of is a dedicated collection of railway-themed magnets. Magnets are small, affordable, easy to collect — and a perfect way to remember a visit.
💡Suggested Magnet Ideas for HCRR to Offer: Individual Vehicle Magnets – Featuring TTC PCC cars, Peter Witt cars, L&PS interurban, etc. Map-Based Designs – Showing historical routes or the museum’s own track layout Seasonal/Event Designs – For Pumpkin Patch rides, Christmas nights, etc. Limited Edition Collector Series – Rotating annually with a collectible theme Historical Logo Magnets – Featuring old transit company logos (e.g. Toronto Civic Railways, HSR, etc.) These would be a hit with souvenir collectors, railfans, and especially families with kids who love taking home a small piece of their adventure.
Overall, the Halton County Radial Railway offers a nostalgic and educational experience that’s both fun and affordable. Whether you're a transit enthusiast, history lover, or just looking for something different to do near Guelph or the GTA, this...
Read moreThis is the only streetcar and subway museum in Ontario. We purchased our tickets over there at the building that is a souvenir/ gift shop and mini snack bar for $25 adults. There are also washrooms in the building. It was a Saturday at 10:30. And there was quite a bit of people here for that time of the morning. We rode all 3 different streetcars and there are guides telling you about the history of the streetcar. I like that they’re dressed in different conductor uniforms. The ride was fairly long but not fast and they run every 30 minutes. They stop at the ice cream shop and it’s in a streetcar. We got 2 cones for $7 ($3.50 for single and $4.50 for a double) even though we ordered a single, she gave us a lot. She was a sweet elderly lady by the name Pauline and she’s worked there for over 20 years. When will you ever get the chance to have an ice cream cone on a street car? You can sit outside on the patio chairs if want. There was a frog pond but we didn’t see any frogs. You have to wait here to get the streetcar back. We went into the large museum at the front and it has lots of old streetcars and subways from different time eras and subways that you can enter. It felt very nostalgic. I can remember riding in all these different streetcars and subways in Toronto. I really enjoyed this building. Also a few store fronts upon entering. Don’t forget to visit the train caboose, where you will find a miniature train set with a few buttons that make a Thomas the tank and another train move. Kids will like that. There is a little play area with little houses for the kids. We spent 3 hours here. The staff here are all friendly. The website doesn’t do it justice. Its...
Read moreI was incredibly disappointed in the service I received from Jim Sorensen. I was trying to inquire about if they open on closed days for wedding photos. Unfortunately I do not have the most experience in booking events like this and I did not expect snyde remarks and rude comments about how my general inquiry was not good enough and did not originally contain enough information for him to spend the time dealing with me.
I ended up finding on the FAQ that they do open on off days but at an increased rate which would have been fine but that was never even covered in the response from Jim, only how "As you are aware, we are NOT open on that date." Or how "Once you give me something to work with, then I can price it out, then you can decide and then, and only then, we will have to put a request out for volunteers to come in for the booking."
I am sorry my simple request of do you open on an off day for pictures was so inconvenient.
Added: 08/30/2019 I am aware that more information would be required when ironing out details for an event such as a wedding but lashing out at a customer for not having all the prior knowledge of all the inner working of an establishment they do not work for is laughable. The lack of effort to work through a miscommunication or misunderstanding and instead blame the customer for being wrong about everything multiple times speaks volumes to the attitude of the employee. Instead I get an email and review response telling me I'm wrong in how I believe I've been treated in this...
