The longest covered bridge in the world is located in Hartland New Brunswick, but did you know that as well as being able to drive across the bridge you can walk across it ? This fascinating historic site was constructed in 1898 and it is amazing to see the enormous beams and intricate construction of this bridge. It is 1, 282 feet long and crosses the Saint John or Wolastoq river. Wolastoq is the original Indigenous name given to the river by the Maliseet people, and translates as " the beautiful river' , and indeed it is . If you are a fan of historic buildings and structures, this trip to Hartland is a must! Walking across the covered pedestrian walkway attached to the bridge, you are suspended high above the river . I am not fond of heights but this is a safe, family friendly walking area that is very well constructed and I was not afraid to venture on it. It provides a terrific vantage point of the surrounding area. As you walk across this side section of the bridge, there are several signs explaining the construction of the bridge and offering history of the area.
