The Glengarry Highland Games is for everyone.
During the day you can bring your family to tour relatively large grounds with all of the food frills you are accustomed to in urban events.
By day, a family function. The tug of war is a crowd favorite among several historical and culturally relevant exhibitions. There are vendors of all kinds and an extremely well prepared program provides more than enough event and options to avail yourself to.
By night, a party like no other. The beer tent (which feels like a whole "Cirque du Soleil" performance could fit in it) doubles as a stage for performers. And the performers have never failed the crowd in all my times out.
Whether you are young and are looking for a night out (bring your mud boots, just in case) with that you can tell a story about for ages or...
If you want to have a big experience in a small town (did I mention the football fieldssss worth of parking ON location?) with the family and take in some heritage and culture...
Then the good memories of my times at The Games invite you to make your own.
Be sure to go the website and check the prices of the season, budget out the meager cost and enjoy the memories for the...
Read moreMy family and I had been to the games about 8 years ago. We thoroughly enjoyed it. We decided to make the trip again this year ( 8 hour drive) to watch the events. Again, we were not disappointed. The athletes amazed us on how strong they were. From throwing the hammer, the rocks, the shieves and of course the caber toss. The event had numerous types of food from BBQ ribs to British meat pies. Scottish tartans (perhaps find your family tartan) shortbread cookies etc. The Beer tents were a welcome addition to a hot day. Other things going on were the girls competing on the highland dance, fiddlers, and drummers trying to pass their next level of skills. My favourite of all is the mass bands. Nothing can compare to see the pipes and drums marching in unison playing together. The event show Friday night from 7-10 was excellent. Fiddlers, highland dancers, bagpipers and bands. Once you have gone to see the highland games you will be hooked and want to go again and again. We have been to Edinburgh Scotland to see the Military Tattoo. If you have never seen the tattoo you should put it on your bucket list. There is...
Read moreIn the past without question I have given the games a 5 star review. Last year after COVID was the best yet as we saw Highland Broadswording join the event. It was the highlight of the year for us for myself and kiddos to be able to pick up a sword and learn the history and sport of Highland Broadswording. Suffice it to say when we went to register for the event this year we were more than a little disappointed to discover the Highland Games had opted not to include the event in this year's games. A kilted run? A rugby tournament? Fun and gimmicky for sure but the Highland Broadsword is a huge part of the cultural heritage on parallel with Highland Piping and Dancing. Its removal from the events was a massive disappointment and the folks that ran the event last year put on a spectacular tournament in Alexandria despite the games rejection of their event.
For now my review drops to a 3/5 and my hope is 2024 the group in charge of planning will re-evaluate the presence of the Highland Broadsword...
