Stayed at the Muskrat cabin for deer hunting with Carl. Arrived earlier than expected, fortunately Carl was already there at Reception and able to use the time to sight in and demonstrate shooting proficiency before we went to the cabin. Reception has clean bathroom, WiFi and small shop (basic camping/swimming stuff, clothing, locally made jams/honeys/toiletries, etc.), credit card accepted.||Cabin: about a 20-minute drive from Reception (beware gravel roads). Parking is on gravel, but there's a wooden walkway that brings you up to the front of the cabin, with grass on either side if you need to wipe off your feet (it was raining most of the time). Front lawn has chairs overlooking the lake, fire pit, and steps head down to the dock where kayaks and a boat await. It was too cold though, didn't try them out. Deck has a table and covered BBQ. Enclosed, screened-in front patio with Montauk chairs, broom is in the corner. Quiet location, didn't see anyone else in the area at all for the duration of the stay.||Inside: Small living room with couch and two comfy armchairs surrounding a wood-burning fireplace - hardwood logs and poker provided. Tip: Bring work gloves to transport extra logs from outside if needed. Card games and location information on the coffee table. 3 bedrooms: 2 twin upstairs, 1 bunk bed room, 1 master BR. Each had its own dresser with extra blanket inside. Master BR only has one side table so we brought a chair in to use on the other side, worked like a charm. ||Appliances: Everything is gas-powered, so it took a bit of figuring out how to turn on the lights (turn on gas, light with lighter) - totally missed the instructions on the kitchen table since it was dark inside. Stove and oven also gas-powered - takes a bit of getting used to the toaster maker (using flimsy rack provided on the stove). The furnace kept the place nice and warm, and with a fire in the fireplace, the upper bedroom were almost unbearably warm. The pilot went out in the water heater on the last day - we didn't bother reporting it since we were leaving soon after, told Reception on our way out and they sent someone to fix it right away. Bring a portable light/flashlight/headlamp, easier to use in a pinch instead of futzing to light the lamps (you will need to climb on furniture to do this if you're short).||What's provided: Bathroom is well-stocked with toiletries, but the first aid kit was lacking items - more on that later. Kitchen well-stocked with soap, brand new scrubber, pots, pans, salt/pepper, utensils, etc. Love the pine-scented toiletries/soaps - available for sale at Reception. Note: The chef's knife was crap and needed to be sharpened, will bring my own next time. Freezer and fridge worked like a charm, no issues. Garbage bins and bags provided. ||TICK ALERT! The location guide had warned of ticks. I wasn't too concerned given how cold it was, and I thought since the dogs were also on Simparica so the tick would just bite and die. We went exploring over the bridge close to the cabin but the trail didn't seem like it was being maintained - lots of mushrooms, saw bear poop on a log. I did check for ticks when we got back, but somehow one ended biting my spouse - he only noticed because it hurt! Someone had stolen the tick key and bandaids from the first aid kit - fortunately we had brought tweezers, our own first aid kit and Ziploc bag for the dead tick, so we were fine. Reported to Reception on our departure though. No long term effects so far, knock on wood. Note to self: stay on trail next time!||There is zero reception for cellphone/internet whatsoever... yay! We brought walkie-talkies to communicate with each other while on site.||Note: there isn't much place to hang/lay your gear out to dry, you may want to bring a portable clothesline especially if it rains all the time. ||Already booked again for this fall, looking forward to...
Read moreCARBON MONOXIDE EXPOSURE! FELT NEGLECTED. JUNE 15, 2021, ME (13w PREGNANT), MY HUSBAND AND OUR 2 TODDLERS, (ONE OF THEM HAS ASTHMA) STAYED IN ONE OF THEIR CHALET(TRICORN) FOR 2 NIGHTS. IT WAS A TREAT FOR OUR 2 TODDLERS BIRTHDAY AND FOR MY HUSBAND FOR FATHERS DAY, BUT OUR FAMILY OUTING DIDN'T GO AS WE PLANNED. IT WAS THE WORST AND SCARIEST EXPERIENCE WE HAD, WE WERE TRAUMATIZED UNTIL NOW. OUR LIVES WERE PUT IN DANGER, NOT ONLY THE 4 OF US BUT 5, WHICH INCLUDES OUR UNBORN CHILD. ON THE NIGHT OF JUNE 15, AROUND 1AM, I WOKE UP FROM A LOUD BEEP, I WAS DIZZY SO I WOKE MY HUSBAND AND HE RAN TO HAVE IT CHECKED, IT WAS THE CARBON MONOXIDE DETECTOR BEEPING, IT BEEPS 4x WHICH SAYS CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY. THERE WAS NO CELLPHONE NETWORK NOR INTERNET CONNECTION SINCE WE WERE AT THE MIDDLE OF THE MOUNTAIN , BUT MY HUSBAND WAS LUCKY TO FIND A PHONE SIGNAL AT THE TERRACE. WE CALLED 911, WE EVACUATED THE PLACE IMMEDIATELY AND STAYED IN OUR CAR FOR ALMOST 4 HOURS, THE 911 RESPONDENTS CAME ~30MINS AFTER OUR CALL. OUR SON WHICH IS 4 YEARS OLD WAS CRYING AT THE CAR, HE WAS TRAUMATIZED, ESPECIALLY LOOKING AT THE LIGHTS FROM THE AMBULANCE AND THE FIRE TRUCK, I TRIED TO CALM HIM AND REASSURED HIM THAT WE ARE SAFE. ONE OF THE MANAGER CAME THAT NIGHT, WE WISHED THEY HAVE RELOCATED US SO WE COULD HAVE RESTED BETTER. AFTER THE 911 RESPONDENTS TOLD THE MANAGER THAT SINCE THEY CANNOT FIND THE SOURCE OF CO, THEY SUSPECTED IT WAS A LEAK FROM THE PROPANE LIGHT AT THE KITCHEN, SINCE IT DOESN'T LIT PROPERLY, THEY ADVICED US TO LEAVE IT OFF, THE MANAGER TOLD US THAT HE WILL SEND A TECHNICIAN TO FIX IT IN THE MORNING AND NO ONE CAME. WE HAVEN'T SLEPT AFTER THAT INCIDENT, OUR KIDS WERE VERY TIRED, ALL OF US FELT EXHAUSTED. WE WENT TO THEIR OFFICE, THE MANAGERS WERE THEIR AND TOLD US THAT THEY WILL SEND A TECHNICIAN IN THE AFTERNOON, BUT AGAIN NO ONE CAME. WE HAVE DECIDED TO LEAVE ALL THE PROPANE LIGHTS OFF, BUT THAT 2ND NIGHT, OUR TODDLERS WERE CRYING AND DEMANDS THE LIGHT TO BE ON, WE TURNED ON 1 PROPANE LIGHT AND OPENED THE WINDOW, IT WAS VERY COLD, THE HEATING WAS NOT WORKING AND WE'RE AFRAID TO TOUCH IT, SO WE HAVE WAITED UNTIL OUR KIDS FELL ASLEEP AND CLOSED THE WINDOW. ME AND MY HUSBAND CANNOT FALL ASLEEP, WE WERE SCARED THAT WHAT IF THE CARBON MONOXIDE DETECTOR MALFUNCTIONS AND IT WONT DETECT ANY LEAKS, WHAT IF IT IS NOT COMING FROM THE PROPANE LIGHTS BUT ON THE OTHER APPLIANCES POWERED BY PROPANE, WHAT IF IT HAPPENS AGAIN, MY HUSBAND KEEPS GETTING UP AND OPENS THE WINDOW THE CLOSES AFTER FEW MINS BECAUSE OF THE COLD, THEN OPENS... THEN CLOSES...THEN OPENS THEN CLOSES... IT WAS A RESTLESS AND EXHAUSTED NIGHT. WE DIDN'T WANT TO ARGUE OR COMPLAIN, EVEN THOUGH WE WERE NOT HAPPY BECAUSE WE WANTED TO ENJOY THAT ONLY DAY LEFT WE HAD FOR THAT VACATION. THEY TOLD US WE WILL PAY THE 1 NIGHT AND THE OTHER NIGHT WILL BE FREE, SO WE HAVE PAID ~$320$ FOR THOSE RESTLESS AND TRAUMATIC NIGHTS, I SHOULD HAVE DEMANDED A FULL REFUND.
ONE OF OUR CONCERN IS THAT WE HOPE THEY HAVE FIXED IT FOR THE NEXT OCCUPANTS, BECAUSE IT IS REALLY VERY VERY DANGEROUS!!! WHILE READING ABOUT THE STORIES OF CO FATALITIES, IT HAVE MADE US MORE SCARED BUT ON TOP OF THAT WE FELT VERY LUCKY TO BE ALIVE.
AT THE MOMENT, SINCE WE ARE NOT SURE HOW LONG WE WERE EXPOSED TO THAT CARBON MONOXIDE AND I EXPERIENCED SOME SYMPTOMS OF CO POISONING THAT NIGHT (DIZZINESS) I AM WAITING FOR MY APPOINTMENT WITH MY OBGYNE TO MAKE SURE MY UNBORN CHILD IS OK.. WE PRAY HARD THAT EVERYTHING IS GOING...
Read moreKenauk is a very special place. As someone who has always loved the wilderness but also appreciates some creature comforts, especially with family members who are more “wilderness naive,” this place is a dream come true. We recently spent a few winter days at Baie Noire. I thought that I would post the answers to some questions that I had before going, especially regarding power, heat, water, the kitchen and outdoors. The house is comfortably warm. There is enough power for the all the basics, but maybe avoid high wattage appliances like a blow dryer. There is a battery indicator on the wall. The water tastes good, but the pressure is, as expected, on the low side. The water temperature ranges from cool to warm-enough, occasionally hot. There are (beautiful) showers, no baths. The kitchen has plenty of fridge space and a great stove / oven, a drip coffee maker, an electric kettle, and dishwasher. Remember that there are no other high wattage appliances (microwave, toaster). That said, there are enough pots, pans, and utensils to cook anything, really. Next time, I will take some parchment paper and rubber gloves, but, with a little creativity, everything else that I needed was there and neatly arranged. There is no wifi but an occasional LTE signal blows in from time to time - no phone service but text messages come in and can go out periodically. There is even a defibrillator in the house. Since we know how to use one, this gave us a bit of extra security feeling. The outdoors is stunning. The roads are exceptionally well maintained - amazing, really. The cross country ski trails are also exceptionally well maintained. I was able to comfortably teach my youngest to cross county ski here. People are authentically friendly and helpful. The house has a very practical and beautiful layout and was perfectly clean when we arrived. I appreciated how it was inviting but not cluttered. We also appreciated the logs and kindling set to go when we arrived - a very thoughtful touch. To keep in mind: the minimalism and heated ceramic floors and high ceilings does mean that sound (like the billiard balls on the pool table my family loved) can bounce around - keep this in mind if that can bother you and you are a large group. Anyway, for us it was perfect. Will be going back as often as we can. Thank you to everyone who helps to keep this place so well maintained, beautiful, and...
