Built in Buxton in 1849,👉 the establishment will reveal how it was used to help 👌former African-American slaves escape to Canada in search of freedom.😉 The past is invaluable, but it's even more incredible when you have the chance to play a role in it.đŸ€” The current population of Buxton, Ontario, 😏is probably around 250, making it a small community. It's a community of people đŸ« with black ancestors and a historical heritage of over 2,000 people. Most of these people are descendants of those who escaped slavery in the United States 🙏 By using the Underground Railroad. đŸ«Ž Ontario has a huge variety of places of unparalleled heritage and historical interest. Some stories are best appreciated in person, and others simply cannot be fully understood . until you have experienced them first-hand. The legacy of Black history in Ontario is best learned about through . This are excellent educational experience To Go 👉 and visit .. The Underground Railroad. you better go & see thre true is out there. Spent two days here for the annual “Homecoming.” This place aka The Elgin Settlement, was the largest & most successful of the black settlements born out of the influx of freedom seekers who came to Canada on the Underground Railroad. It is rare to find intact buildings from this era. The schoolhouse, church & museum are the legacy of this amazing community. We had a wonderful time at Homecoming & will return.

This was the annual observance of Black History month with the highlight "100 year anniversary of the underground railway". I took part in a drum circle (community). There were classic cars, a baseball tournament featuring the local "best of the best". There could have been more food vendors. The classic cars should have been displayed further away from the food. Diesel & food do not mix.

About one week ago we were in North Buxton where my mother’s family is rooted from. With help from the curators (Shannon and Mariah) at the Buxton National Historical Site we were able to research deeper into this rich history. We were able to research in records from the 1800’s looking for facts and details about their property, occupations and other personal information and we were successful. We have now a better understanding of where / how they lived in Buxton. We also found many headstones of my ancestors and even new pictures of family I had never seen. Both my husband and I were like “kids in a candy store !”

Of course we will need to go back because this is only the “tip of the iceberg” as they say. We will work with the Curators in giving them information they don’t have so that our history will be completely uncovered for many generations to come.

We are very thankful to uncover more Black...

Had a cousin visiting from Holland and told her that we HAD to visit North Buxton Museum. What a Gem we have in our community. First of all, Thank you to Shannon Prince for such a lovely welcome and then to Mariah for the most amazing, informative and heart rending tour I could have imagined. I learned more that day than I have learned in all my years. Again, Mariah was a total rock star! She informed us that the tour usually takes about 1 hour and 20 minutes but we were there with her for 3 hours because we had so many questions. She was in no rush and we had an incredible time. I am so thankful that the Buxton Museum is preserving history and even more thankful for the people who are a part of it (the museum) - who are so passionate about this heritage. CAN'T RECOMMEND MORE HIGHLY!!! Bringing my daughter and Grandson there soon also. I'm sure I'll learn...
