About one week ago we were in North Buxton where my motherâs family is rooted from. With help from the curators (Shannon and Mariah) at the Buxton National Historical Site we were able to research deeper into this rich history. We were able to research in records from the 1800âs looking for facts and details about their property, occupations and other personal information and we were successful. We have now a better understanding of where / how they lived in Buxton. We also found many headstones of my ancestors and even new pictures of family I had never seen. Both my husband and I were like âkids in a candy store !â
Of course we will need to go back because this is only the âtip of the icebergâ as they say. We will work with the Curators in giving them information they donât have so that our history will be completely uncovered for many generations to come.
We are very thankful to uncover more Black...

First of all, Thank you to Shannon Prince for such a lovely welcome and then to Mariah for the most amazing, informative and heart rending tour I could have imagined. I learned more that day than I have learned in all my years. Again, Mariah was a total rock star! She informed us that the tour usually takes about 1 hour and 20 minutes but we were there with her for 3 hours because we had so many questions. She was in no rush and we had an incredible time. I am so thankful that the Buxton Museum is preserving history and even more thankful for the people who are a part of it (the museum) - who are so passionate about this heritage. CAN'T RECOMMEND MORE HIGHLY!!! Bringing my daughter and Grandson there soon also. I'm sure I'll learn...
