Excellent historical information. Displays are well done. I was disappointed by the washroom facilities (there was a lot that was out of stock or out of order). While we did arrivedl a little over an hour before closing, the guide in the building as well as the person at the cash in the gift shop were very short and kept reminding us that we only had an hour. I thought that was odd as we were told they recommend an hour for the visit (and we had a little over an hour). We were up front when we arrived and knew we had a short amount of time. We asked to see the 12 mins video at 3:20 and were told no because it was 'too late'. We just didn't feel very welcome overall. The presentation of information is very well done. The gift shop had many unique items and I was impressed by the selection of children's books for sale. There was a cool resource in the church about hymns and their origins including some sung on plantations and others by Harriett Tubman. I would rate the site a 5 when it comes to historical information, a 3 for facilities and a 2 for staff interaction...

I need to visit here very huge part of our history? I often wonder why these communities are do quiet laid back ? I'm very disturb even in 2025 the entire upper and lower so call Canada owes us. Systematic discrimination by now saying how black people build this country they rode on our backs we were the labour's and still is were still being treating ad less and because you might few dollars yoy keep quite? Listen until ever stone I'd unturned no matter the amount of money and pat on your back we will never be whole, just look on the court dockets check there records look on debts check there own records to see how we as black people still in 2025 bring destroyed I'm the court system still own by British and French and loyalist share holders get off that comfort zone.? Just check with every black family guarantee there in the pockets via driving violation after building the roads statues and codes is what replace Jim crows black codes? Wake up there still giving it to us in many ways? My opinion...

This hidden gem should be a destination spot for every Canadian, educator, history buff, and all around lover of people regardless of race. Learning who Josiah Henson was outside of being associated with Uncle Tom's Cabin by Harriet Beatrice Stowe was a paradigm shifting experience. As a Black person seeing and learning how 1 Black man was able to rescue his entire family plus 118 others from the evils of slavery, as a teen listened and memorized the bible because it was illegal to learn how to read to become a preacher and ultimately put Canada on the map as the only Black person to have an exhibit at Queen Victoria's world fair. The ability to achieve that and more in the face of such adversity is what should be taught in every school and a visit to the museum a must as a school trip. It's not just Black history. I had been wanting to visit this museum for a number of years and finally took the opportunity to come in, listen and learn, as well as pay my respects to Rev. Henson and family at the family cemetery. Jackie, Steven, and Whitney are wonderful ambassadors, and are truly dedicated in their passion to welcome guests, and share knowledge. I recommend taking a guided tour if it is available when you visit, as it will really bring history to life. If you ever had a passing idea of visiting the Josiah Henson Museum of African-Canadian History, you must do so. Also be sure to spend some time perusing the items in the gift shop; from books to handmade items, you're sure to find something.

This museum needs six stars! Mr Cook did an amazing job of telling us the story (and serendipitously we were able to assist getting an important item to a relatives friend!) This is a must see museum if you are at all interested in the abolitionist movement, the end of plantation slavery in North America, and the beginning of the Underground Railroad. Highly interesting museum and good selection of t-shirts, educational materials and souvenirs. And our former Prime Minister says Canada has no culture of its own - untrue! Mr Josiah Henson sounded like a God fearing and courageous man!
