The staff is fantastic, the assistance with locking is great. Unfortunately this is the first place that I’ve encountered where the public feels entitled to use the facilities after hours. Boaters pay a fee to tie up overnight and have a reasonable expectation of privacy on the docks subject of course to other boaters. Signs are posted “no fishing’ Some people still fish but it’s generally accepted that you don’t fish near someone’s boat. Unfortunately at this lock station some members of the public feel entitled to use the docks as their own waterfront property and fish or sit and have a drink or inspect your boat as they see fit. —- Warning, as soon as the lock staff leaves you lose all semblance of privacy or peace and quiet I am speaking specifically of the lower lock wall, blue and gray line. Not the staffs fault. I don’t know what the answer is but I certainly won’t ever spend...

Took my fiancee on our first little fishing excursion. Didn't catch any fish, lost my brand new diamond stud earring. I am a glass half full kinda guy tho. Can't blame the fish for not liking the way I reel my rod and we went back to look for my earring after dark... a long shot right? Nope. My flashlight caught a glimmer on the dock and there it was, an inch on either side and I never would have seen it again. My take here? The locks just wanted me to come back. My story. The moral? An adventure at every turn if you look at it right. I must add that I hadn't been there in over 30 years. It had not changed a bit. Amazing. Don't forget to pack in/out please...

Beautiful spot to explore with or without your kids (6+ in my opinion for the lock wall walks without parent at arms length). When crossing the road path from the long dock, be careful as there isn't much space to slam breaks if you happen to cross and a vehicle turns that wind coming up the hill, listen and look for traffic and cross quickly. The area of exploration is quite large and you could spend hours up, down and on either sides. Spots to fish easily and some better if your willing to climb or whack through some bush to the river creek part or just off the shore on the upper part. Pretty in all seasons! Perfect spot for photos...

Just 100 meter east of the Locks is the generating station at Kingston Mills. It sits on the edge of Colonel By Lake. In 1914, on the site of an old grist mill, a new hydroelectric plant was constructed by Gananoque Light & Power. The plant was originally constructed with one turbine, Unit #1 was considered the “workhorse of the company” and continues to generate electricity today. Two major expansions occurred, one in 1926 saw the installation of an additional generator which was later upgraded in 1971, at the same time as a third expansion took place with a third generator energized in 1975 increasing the output of the station to 2.2 MW.

Great place to explore the age old locking mechanism, enjoy the sitting in park and interacting with other people. Getting to know the methods behind the wheel from expert who work there. The Kingston Mills area has a nice little park with tables, washrooms and a ferry ride (owned) to give you an experience of the Rideau Canal. On the other side of road you can sit an enjoy a nice barbecue, fishing experience along with a small trail to explore. Great parking space, and a good spot to spend a couple of hours in peace. Fun for kids to explore, and lucky if they get to see the train passing iver the bridge.
