BRILLIANT! The best heritage experience on PEI. In fact, one of the finest and most engaging, authentic, and inspiring heritage places I've ever been.
The village is beautifully kept in memory to the island's earlier settlers, although the people who staff the village make it very much alive in today's world. In particular, Junior, a Mi'kmaq elder and artisan, was exceptionally welcoming and knowledgeable and explained a great deal about the Indigenous history of the island as he showed us around his beautiful birch bark wigwam. Khalid also gave us a brilliant tour of the general store, post office, and Clark's house, fully equipped with answering all our questions and a little ghost story (friendly ghosts) as well. Then, to top off the experience, Mike, the farm keeper, who also went to school in the old schoolhouse several decades ago (so cool!) took an incredible amount of time and care to show us all around the barns, forge, and fields. He even invited us in to meet their impressive turkeys, goats, lovely black faced sheep, horses, and Jersey cow, Flora.
We walked away feeling as though we'd just traveled back in time and marveling at what a wonderful addition to PEI the team at Orwell has...
Read moreThe village itself was quite interesting. The buildings were well equipped with period specific items. There were only a few people working there and not one in each building to be able to give you the history.
We were very disappointed about the booking of the "Bread and Butter" experience, which was $40 per person. We called ahead to book based on the description on their website, which included "a visit to the field to harvest some grain with a scythe and bring a bushel back to the barn yard" as well as "milking the goat at the milking station." However when we arrived, there were bowls of oil and water, yeast, and flour set up in the Hall for us to mix. When asked if we would be harvesting the wheat and milking the goats, we were met with a laugh because "it's not harvest season" and the goats hadn't given birth yet. We had planned our whole day around attending this experience, and had our child very excited about it. It was disappointing that for $40 a person all that experience provided was mixing basic store bought pantry ingredients. We were able to get a refund. But, as a caution, I would not recommend booking...
Read moreThis place is actually amazing!! I grew up all my life in Toronto so I have never experienced any form of village lifestyle. As a trip to PEI, we randomly found this attraction while driving by. Believe it or not but this was definitely the highlight in the province. We loved every attraction in the village. Not only the whole village itself is a museum but everything from the farm animal to the general shop has antique items from 1800s. It felt surreal and amazing at same time.
One of the person who grew up in the village gave us tour of the general shop and we learned so much from her! Then we went to the woodwork where there was another individual breaking logs to build houses. The way they dress to talk felt truly like living in 1800s.
Another amazing part was visiting the school. You can see the carvings on the tables made by students from over 200 years ago. It’s pretty amazing that such carving still exists and it’s so interesting to see...
