The City of Pickering is proceeding with detailed design and construction of the 2012 Council approved Master Plan for Rotary Frenchman's Bay West Park.
Phase 1 Construction
The City of Pickering Council approved funds for the first phase of construction in the 2018 Capital Budget. The tree removal required to permit the first phase of construction will be completed by early April. Construction is expected to commence in early May and be completed by the fall of 2018.
Public Consultation for Master Plan Process
A Public Open House was held on November 9, 2016 to share with the community the improvements proposed for this park, and to gather input and comments.
The quality and amount of feedback received from the residents and stakeholders on the Frenchman's Bay West Park Master Plan was encouraging and appreciated. Comments have been reviewed by City staff including Senior Management, the City's design consultant, Toronto Region & Conservation Authority staff, and members of Council. Input was also provided by Durham Regional Police Services and Pickering Fire Services.
A number of positive changes were made to the plan including:
reconfiguration of the parking area at the boat launch to provide turning space that accommodates only small craft launching, inclusion of a minimal number of short term car/trailer parking spaces, and relocation of the accessible parking and pedestrian walkway to the beach side of this area
relocation of the Interpretive Educational Area to the south side of Beachpoint Promenade
redesign in scale and style of the Natural Interpretive Play Area, to be more closely linked to the Educational Interpretive Area
increase the number of enhanced beachfront access points (to control pedestrian crossings through the dune areas)
inclusion of an accessible fishing node on...
Read moreBeautiful park with plenty of space, kids play area, kids water area, trail for walkers, beautiful but short beach area for water sports or swimming lovers. Highly recommended for all age groups, bbq, plan games, enjoy the greenery or just lay-down and relax with family and friends. Very less spots for parking near the park, but plenty of space outside the park around the road. Come with tents, games, ball games or bicycles or kites etc to enjoy more. Its just a park and dont have alot of monitored activities here, bring your stuff to get busy. Best spot for summer fun. I wonder how it looks like in winters. Just great experience always. Toilets for kids, gents and ladies available only at main entrance, near parking. Wheelchair accessible park and toilets. You can buy snakes or ice-cream in the only shop. Don’t expect alot they might not have everything available all the time. It doesnt have alot of shaded spots near kids play areas, bring tents, chairs and sheet to sit under the...
Read moreThe Rotary Frenchman's Bay West Park has been designated as an Environmentally Sensitive Area by the Toronto Region Conservation Authority due to its diversity of vegetation and significant natural features. The park is characterized by a barrier beach, sand bar coastal wetlands, meadows, and climax forest. The barrier beach is a dynamic beach and sand dune system that is dominated by marram grass and eastern cottonwood. This sand dune complex is a critically important and rare coastal ecological community that can be found in only a few locations within the Greater Toronto Area. The shoreline and dune stabilization process that is being undertaken by the TRCA has helped establish and protect the coastal wetlands found in...
