A chance to see one of the largest hydro-electric facilities in North America up close. Self-guided and guided tours allow visitors to learn the full history, social, ecological and financial consequences of this massive construction project on the Columbia River in the heart of the Canadian Rockies. A wealth of interpretive exhibits are provided and visitors have the rare opportunity to walk on the crest of a high dam. The primary purposes of the dam are to provide huge amounts of electrical power and some flood control in the Columbia River valley. The design does not allow for large scale storage of water for municipal or agricultural use and has no provisions to allow upstream migration of native fish populations. The town of Revelstoke and the surrounding developed areas could be exposed to inundation and severe damage if the dam or spillway infrastructure were ever to be compromised.
