A chance to see one of the largest hydro-electric facilities in North America up close. Self-guided and guided tours allow visitors to learn the full history, social, ecological and financial consequences of this massive construction project on the Columbia River in the heart of the Canadian Rockies. A wealth of interpretive exhibits are provided and visitors have the rare opportunity to walk on the crest of a high dam. The primary purposes of the dam are to provide huge amounts of electrical power and some flood control in the Columbia River valley. The design does not allow for large scale storage of water for municipal or agricultural use and has no provisions to allow upstream migration of native fish populations. The town of Revelstoke and the surrounding developed areas could be exposed to inundation and severe damage if the dam or spillway infrastructure were ever to be compromised. It would be nice to see a real time readout of the power...

We made a stop while coming from British Columbia, It will be extra exit from the Highway 1. Educational activities inside the visitor center are very good for kids. Children can learn and see how electricity is made through renewable sources of Energy. . Demo models of turbines and motors give children excitement of making electricity and see glowing bulbs. Its the fun for children with the combination of education. At the top level by the deck you can see the model of mountains and rivers for Southern Alberta and BC with cross border graphical model of whole Canada and America in relate to electricity model making This will give proud moment for children about their Country and provinces. Looking from top of the deck you will see big reservoir on one side and other side you will see Columbia River with lots of greenery. I ma pretty sure in spring season it will be combination of multiple colors of...

The Revelstoke Dam Visitor Centre is a fantastic place for a family outing, offering both education and a ton of fun. This isn't just a simple dam tour; it's an exciting and hands-on experience that captivates visitors of all ages. Kids especially will love the interactive exhibits and the chance to see a massive hydro-electric project up close. The centre does an excellent job of explaining how the dam works and its importance to the region in a way that’s easy to understand for everyone. It’s truly an educational adventure. The displays are well-designed and the guides are friendly and knowledgeable, making the whole visit engaging and worthwhile. Plus, the sheer scale of the dam is impressive, providing a powerful sense of awe. You'll leave with a greater appreciation for engineering and the power of nature. It's an ideal spot for families to learn and have a...

If you’re traveling through Revelstoke you must stop off at the Railway Museum and the Revelstoke Dam hydroelectric facility. I just loved this museum. Housed in a beautiful timber framed building, the trains, history and memorabilia brought the construction and running of the Canadian Pacific Railway to life. The steam train was magnificent, the lounge car, and the rolling stock outside great too. The ambiance reflected the passion of the people who put this lovely museum together. Allow around an hour, and then head off to the dam. What a fantastic place this is. The scale is just enormous. Be sure to go on the guided tour. Our guide Emilie was very knowledgable and informative. Full of facts both technical and general, it was so interesting and the scale of the place awesome. Allow 1-1.5 hours. Do not miss, and as a bonus we saw a mother bear and 2 cubs on the road up.

This is promoted as an interesting attraction and a way to learn about hydroelectricity. Although they do offer guided tours, we chose not to wait but instead follow the signs and the provided guide map. I found afterwards that they do rent audio tours, but these were not offered to us when we paid our admittance. To be honest, I was disappointed. You can look down from the visitor centre into the turbine hall, but because the turbines are under the floor there's nothing to see. Then you walk through a tunnel to an elevator that takes you to a viewing platform on the top of the dam. You can see downstream, but not up at the impounded water above. You definitely got a good sense of the scale of the project, but that's about it.
