Lower Fort Garry was built in 1830 by the Hudson's Bay Company on the western bank of the Red River, 20 mi north of the original Fort Garry. Treaty 1 was signed there. A devastating flood destroyed Fort Garry in 1826, prompting the Company's then-governor, George Simpson, to search for a safer location down river.

My family and I had a wonderful day here! We participated in the blacksmithing and bannock making activities and the instructors were so friendly and knowledgeable. We got to use a hammer and an anvil to create something from soft metal and stamp a medallion! The bannock is made in a cast iron pan over coals. It tasted so good with butter and jam. There are lots of things to see and do. My kids also liked playing croquet, touching the furs, and playing roles. They also just enjoyed running in the open grass which is well maintained. My eldest did the 'scavenger hunt' in the explorer booklet and at the end of the visit, went to the treasure chest to enter the code he deciphered and got a prize! He was so happy. I had many memories going to LFG as a kid (field trips and family outings) and I hope my kids have good memories too!

Lower Fort Garry is truly a hidden gem just outside of Winnipeg. The site is beautifully preserved, and the historical significance of the fort is brought to life by the knowledgeable and friendly staff. The costumed interpreters are fantastic, offering interactive demonstrations that make you feel like you’ve stepped back into the 19th century. The grounds are stunning, with scenic views along the Red River and well-maintained trails perfect for a peaceful walk. Whether you’re interested in history, enjoy exploring historic buildings, or simply want a unique day trip, Lower Fort Garry has something for everyone. It’s a perfect spot for families, history buffs, and anyone looking to learn more about Canada’s past. Highly recommend visiting this incredible historic site!

Went here yesterday with a group of my school kids. Super fun and informational. Why I put 3 stars is because I was served 2 raw chicken fingers and had eaten the cooked ones on top (to my knowledge) the server was very apologetic and I knew it wasn’t her fault but was only offered a slice of watermelon, and 2 pastries. I took them because I felt very uncomfortable with this situation. I went back and asked for a refund but she told me no refund was available as I had already ate the other portion of my food. So I asked for half of a refund which was 8 dollars. The cook (I think?) came out and refunded me and was also very apologetic which was appreciated. I just think the initial me bringing my raw piece of chicken that I had bitten would have been a full refund? Was a very weird and uncomfortable encounter. Just a heads up.

I was a little unsure if I would be allowed in, the fort was built to keep out American's, but I was able to bribe the gate keeper enough I could get in with my Canadian friend LOL. The fort is a really nice historical area, well kept and very informative. The staff working there dress in period clothing and talk as if they work and live there, that part is more for the kids but I still enjoyed it. However I did ask some questions that the staff did not know, but being a retired archaeologist, I get that at a lot of places LOL. You have to check out the graffiti on the front gate, it was placed there by the soldiers that was stationed there in the mid 1800's. I really enjoyed my visit

The last time I had been here was when I was a kid in the early 1980s. Had we not been affected by the pandemic, the buildings would have been open to the public. The main building, though, would have been closed anyway due to a water leak. I really appreciated the great demeanor of the actors who were present to give us glimpses into the lives of the people who worked and resided in and around the fort. My favourite part was hearing the cook tell us what drinks he made there (tea, hot chocolate and even coffee though that wasn't typical in the late 1800s). There's more but I suggest you visit the Fort to find out.

We had the most amazing time during my recent visit to Lower Fort Garry! The staff members were incredibly friendly and knowledgeable, adding a personal touch to the entire experience. The historic houses were beautifully maintained, offering a glimpse into the past that was both fascinating and captivating. The meticulous upkeep of the grounds highlighted the dedication and care that goes into preserving this historical gem. The on-site restaurant was a delightful surprise, with reasonable prices & tasted great. We had smiles on our faces the entire day. I wholeheartedly recommend a visit to Lower Fort Garry to all!!
