LAKE ST. LOUIS / LAC ST. LOUIS
Lac St. Louis is one of the most scenic locations on the West Island of Montreal. It’s a huge, beautiful lake where the Ottawa and St. Lawrence rivers join. This is great for a day trip with history and enjoyment close to or on the water.
HISTORICAL ROOTS AND VALOIS BAY
This lake is a giant section of the St. Lawrence River, part of the Seaway. Stop by the peaceful Valois Bay area in Pointe-Claire. Before WWII, this was "cottage country" for summer homes and taking vacations at the beach. (Unfortunately the beaches are no longer suitable for swimming due to contaminated waters.)
LAKESHORE DRIVE AND LANDMARKS
The scenic drive along Lakeshore Road (Chemin du Bord-du-Lac) is a must! The road follows the lake and goes through charming, historic towns.
Top stops include:
• John Abbott College and MacDonald Farm (McGill University): The MacDonald Farm (by John Abbott/McGill) in Ste-Anne-de-Bellevue is huge. Started in 1905, it’s actually quite famous for being the last remaining dairy farm still operating on the Island of Montreal, making it a truly unique historical and agricultural landmark. You can also purchase amazing apples and produce from MacDonald Farm in the fall for very reasonable prices.
• The Old Windmill (Moulin à Vent de Pointe-Claire): In Pointe-Claire Village, you can visit the Old Windmill. Built over 300 years ago, this stone tower is an iconic historic landmark. It is a perfect setting for photos! • Stewart Hall: This is a beautiful old mansion (Mull Hall, 1916). The Stewart family saved it from being torn down and gave it to the city in 1963. It's now a cultural center with amazing lake views.
WATER SPORTS AND RECREATION
This is a wonderful setting if you like being on the water:
• Sailing: A top spot for sailing. You’ll see many boats, especially around the Pointe-Claire Yacht Club. • Canoeing and Kayaking: Bays (like Valois) are calm for paddling. It’s relaxing, and you can sometimes spot big cargo ships in the Seaway!
SUMMARY
The Lakeshore Road drive is the best plan to view the scenery along the lake. You can stop for coffee, watch the boats, or check out the historic farm, Old Windmill and Stewart Hall. This is a wonderful and enjoyable scenic drive!
