Well, I missed my flight back to Toronto because I lost track of time while visiting Batoche and drove to the airport too late, but that’s ok! The visit was worth it. The grounds are just beautiful and serene, and the costumed guide (I forgot her name, but it was the afternoon of June 12th) gave me an animated tour of the church and the rectory, and patiently answered each of my too-many questions.
I would recommend at least 2.5 hours for the visit: 30 minutes for the guided visit of the church and the rectory (there are so many fascinating stories and details), at least an hour and a half for the grounds unless you take the seasonal shuttle (it is a large site, and very easy to lose your sense of time while reflecting in the cemetery or marvelling at the views of the river along the hiking trails), and another 30 minutes for the visitor centre museum exhibit and café, which I didn’t get to do because I ran out of time. You should budget more time if you wish to watch the 40-minute film at the visitor centre or visit East Village, which you can hike to from the main area or drive to through a...
Read moreIf you find yourself looking for a day full of history, beautiful landscape, lovely tour guides- please take a trip to Batoche. Very easy drive from Saskatoon, NB or PA, it’s a place everyone should visit. Great for families or really anyone looking to spend a day immersed in history. The tour guides Stephanie, Aimee, Bradley are knowledgeable, interesting and excellent ambassadors. Our tour cart operator was friendly and courteous .. give yourself at least 4 hours to watch the video, your the exhibits and go on a decent tour outside. Make sure to stop by the graveyard where you will see the resting place of a 93 year old man killed in the battle at Batoche. Take a walk or take a ride.. lots to see and do. I gave it a 4/5 because the gift shop is not currently open and that was a bit disappointing as o like to collect souvenirs - other than that -...
Read moreWe enjoyed our visit very much! The staff is just amazing! I am from Saskatchewan and quite familiar with the Northwest Resistance but I went with a friend from BC who only has hazy memories of learning about the Resistance in grade school. Our interpretive guide was beyond friendly and knowledgeable. It was a quiet September day so he took the two of us on a golf cart to visit the village and cemetery. The village site is amazing, with the buildings fully outfitted in historic items and a garden growing beside the house. It was fun to explore. On our return to the interpretive centre, we walked though the gallery room and then my friend bought a ton of stuff at the gift shop. Before we left, he had lunch at one of the many picnic tables. Overall, a beautiful site, friendly and knowledge staff, nice location. 12/10 would...
