Tantalus Lookout: Breathtaking Views with a Touch of History
Tantalus Lookout, perched atop Pu'u Ualakaa State Park in Oahu, offers a stunning panorama of Honolulu and beyond. Here's a breakdown of your experience:
Panoramic Paradise: The main attraction is undeniably the view. Tantalus Lookout boasts breathtaking vistas encompassing Honolulu, Diamond Head, Waikiki Beach, and even a glimpse of Pearl Harbor on a clear day. The lush green mountains and sparkling Pacific Ocean complete the picture postcard scene.
Scenic Drive and Hike: The journey to the lookout is part of the charm. A winding mountain road offers scenic views in itself. For the more adventurous, there's an unmarked trail leading further down the mountain for even more expansive vistas.
Relaxation or Picnic: The lookout offers a peaceful environment to soak up the views. Spread out a blanket for a picnic lunch or simply relax on a bench and enjoy the scenery.
Keep in mind:
Limited Amenities: There are no restrooms, shops, or food options at the lookout itself. Come prepared with any snacks or drinks you might need. Parking: Parking can be limited, especially during peak season. Be prepared for potential crowds and arrive early to secure a spot. Safety: While uncommon, there have been reports of car break-ins. Avoid leaving valuables visible in your vehicle.
Overall: Tantalus Lookout is a must-visit for anyone seeking breathtaking views of Oahu. The scenic drive, panoramic vistas, and peaceful atmosphere make it a worthwhile stop. Just remember to come prepared with food, drinks, and be mindful of potential parking limitations and car safety.
Bonus Tip: For a touch of history, research the legend of Tantalus, the Greek mythological figure associated with the mountain range's name. It adds an interesting layer...
Read moreTantalus lookout or as my hubby and I know it as the place to stop and clean up the kids (and car) after they have thrown up due to the winding roads, is one of the more scenic places to stop to get fresh air and views if you're on your way back to Vancouver or Squamish.
About 30 minutes away from Whistler this is just one of those places surrounded by what the Pacific Northwest does best, which is provide Hollywood motion picture like sunset valley and mountain views. There are really no words descriptive enough to tell you of what is going on here. Tantalus Range is directly in front of you, still snow caped and majestically placed behind a beautiful valley that extends out as far out as you can see.
This particular lookout is only accessible if you are driving south towards Vancouver. However, if you did want to take in the view, in this location, as you are driving north towards Whistler, there is a road on the right before this lookout and it provides amazing views from a higher vantage point. There is also a cute wooden bench at the top of a pile of boulders to sit on to enjoy nature and just be.
Parking is plentiful in both areas and visitors don't stay long so spots are always popping up. There is a picnic table and benches which I have only used to stand on to take better photos. Be careful if you climb up on to the small rock wall to get a shot, it looks like a really long way down into that valley.
Overall if you are arriving in or departing Whistler, this is an worthwhile spot to take in BC nature and it's beauty for a...
Read moreMount Tantalus is the highest mountain in the Tantalus Range and is called "tsekílx" by the Swxwú7mesh indigenous people. The view is definitely tantalizing.
NOTE - The origin of the name Tantalus comes from Greek mythology. Tantalus was a Greek mythological figure most famous for his eternal punishment in Tartarus.
He was made to stand in a pool of water beneath a fruit tree with low branches, with the fruit ever eluding his grasp and the water always receding before he could take a drink. It is thought that this is the origin of the word "tantalize".
