I did the Patient 709 room with a few of my friends a couple of days ago and overall it was a great setup. A few of the puzzles were a little challenging at times but not too difficult for a bunch of teenagers. The experience was very immersive and went very well until we needed a hint...we ended up wasting about 15 minutes of our time in total waiting for a staff member to come give us our hint during two occasions. The first time we clicked the button for a hint when we had 25 minutes remaining...surprised that the game master didn't come; we kept returning and clicking the button every couple of minutes. Still, no response. Finally, when we had 15 minutes remaining the game master decided to give us our hint. It wasn't a big deal at first .. I get it, the game master may have been busy. But then we needed another hint five minutes later and ended up waiting an additional five minutes for the game master to give us our hint. To top it off, we were not even given the time we lost due to poor response times at the end. The game master told us that we could have escaped the room in no more than five or ten minutes when he kicked us out on the hour. If he had just given us the time we had lost waiting for him to give us the hint we could've escaped and the night would've been much more enjoyable for us.
From my experience the room was absolutely amazing and the staff were friendly and great to talk to, however the wait made the experience very frustrating.
UPDATE: I have since been in contact with one of the owners of Escape Quest. They apologized for our experience and provided an explanation to why we had such a long wait for our hints, as well as explained that they seem to have resolved the issue. They also offered a free pass for each of my teammates for us to return at a later date. Our team has since returned and we did the 1892 room. Once again, the room was absolutely amazing. The layout was great and interesting as something really cool happens that I have never encountered in an escape room before (obviously I can't say anymore than that). The room was once again challenging, but definitely not extremely hard. Our team escaped with 4 minutes and 11 seconds remaining on the clock. The staff were beyond friendly and were very quick to respond to our requests for hints. One guy in particular was amazing to talk to, extremely funny, and was really good at giving hints in a way that assisted us with the puzzles but didn't solve them for us (as hints should be). Altogether, the staff made the night very enjoyable for our team. I have changed my rating from three to five stars as we thoroughly enjoyed our experience other than the issue with the hint button. I would strongly recommend Escape Quest as they offer a great experience to their clients and have great customer service. My team will definitely be back to try another room and are very thankful for the resolution to the problem we...
Read moreMy husband and I are avid escape room enthusiasts down in the US so when we went to visit family in Newfoundland we were very excited to see St. John's had an escape room with multiple rooms with cool themes and a very professional, well written website. Everything looked so fun but since we were tourists the Newfoundland-specific angles of Taken by the Faeries and Lost Colony of Atlantis appealed most to me. We did Taken by the Faeries first and I loved it! We didn't need any clues and finished with time to spare but we didn't breeze through it with no effort- it was challenging and so, so fun. The theming was adorable and at the price point I love how much effort they put into making the ambience of each sub-room feel really special. The best was a twist ending we didn't see coming and I've never encountered anything like it in an escape room before! Tricksy faeries. Afterwards we popped over to the cat cafe within walking distance to try some delicious Newfie toutons and while we ate them we booked Atlantis and came right back! It was also fun and a totally different vibe, more comedic elements and had a computer "hacking" component that was fun. We escaped that one, too, also without clues but not without struggle! One thing that was different compared to most escape rooms in the Chicago-Milwaukee area that charge a bit more is the GM wasn't watching us closely to offer little hints if we seemed stuck on something or encourage us if we had the right solution and just needed to keep finagling at a fussy lock- they made it clear a GM would only come to help if we pushed the clue button, but the staff were all super nice and I have faith they would have helped out if we decided we needed them. In the end we couldn't justify doing all 4 rooms in one day but if they still have Undead and Best Kind Rewind next time we visit we really look forward to doing those, too! Also beyond their escape rooms they have an AWESOME gift shop in the lobby if you like puzzle games, best I've ever seen at an...
Read moreListen, if you want a fun, cooperative time with friends, this is the place you go in St. John's. I've played two rooms, one in September 2019 and this past Saturday (October 24th, 2020) and both experiences were absolutely fantastic! Without spoiling the rooms, both were immersive, and as soon as you enter the rooms, you're dropped into the most fun puzzle solving blitz, with an immersive, close to home storyline!
The staff? Phenomenal. They're so friendly and warm when you enter, and they are upbeat and make you more excited. They explain the rules carefully, and when/if you have to ask for hints, they expertly give you just enough information to make you go 'D'Oh!', and then let you get right back to puzzle solving.
I am so excited to hopefully come back to St. John's and play another room with my friends for my birthday - no better way to spend my precious time when visiting town. HIGHLY...
