My husband was hiking a second of the east coast trail which ended at Fort Amherst, so I drove this way to pick him up. You cannot drive to the lighthouse. You have to park a ways back - in a well signed area. Everything between there and the lighthouse at Fort Amherst is residential. The walk was about 15 min from parking to the end, with lovely views of the narrows and Signal hill. The lighthouse itself cannot be visited, but you can walk near it and take in the views. Park is 10 min walk as cars are not permitted on the old part of the road to the lighthouse. But wow, on the short walk you can see the opening of the bay, with multi colored houses, the ships in the harbor, the parked sailing boats and at the right time...the massive cruise ships coming in. Read moreThe Missus and I along with a part of our West Coast travelling group visited the historical Fort Amherst site. It was built in 1777 to guard St. John's harbour.
After parking, it is a very short walk with a slight incline. It passes thru private properties so ensure you are not trespassing. There are beautiful views of the Signal Hill's side of the harbour and also southeast to Cape Spear.
