I'm RC (ok, Recovering Catholic) and I've lived in St. John's for a couple of decades or more, yet have never visited the Basilica. It was always wrapped in scaffolding and never all that inviting. Now it has been fully restored, it really is quite an impressive building. I went to mass (and wasn't struck down, so is there hope for me?) last Sunday evening, and I must admit, I spent most of it admiring the building. Since the evening was drawing in, unfortunately the stained glass didn't stand out, but still it is a beautiful building inside If churches are your thing, check this historic one out next time...
Read moreStunning Cathedral! 60 stained glass original windows (15 have been refurbished as we all know time is not our friend) Amazing architecture and this Cathedral has that special smell of "old" when walking around it. 🙂 There are stories about the inside statues and you can take pictures but don't use a flash or employee will ask you not to take pictures. Signs when you come in state to speak low...all voices echo and plus its disrespectful to raise your voice in a holy structure. Read moreChurches like this will be gone from the future they don't build them like this anymore, I grew up going to this church and it's was sad to see that with all the money the churches brought in at one time they didn't maintain them and now they need funds, there was so many areas inside that need obvious upkeep, repair or restoration. Such a shame, go see the other beauties inside, wood, marble, granite, lime stone and all the stain glass, even in smaller chapel inside main church, and the painted ceilings. Many things have gone from when I was a kids and more will be gone...
