Having grown up on the South Shore of N.S., this is my favourite beach. It is long, has decent waves (but not for surfing), and fantastic sand..... and no people. Just to be clear, this is a beach, just a beach. There are a couple of change rooms and outhouses, but no real plumbing or running water. But if you want a vast expanse of sand and be left more-or-less to yourself, this is the place! (plenty of parking, no lifeguards either, there is one restaurant withing walking distance, which is pretty good) Oh, and the water temperature is what you'd expect for the South Shore, where it's the Labrador Current that holds sway, not the Gulf Stream. But on a hot day,...

Somerville Beach is a beautiful, shallow saltwater beach perfect for a family day at the seaside.

Washrooms, changing rooms, and picnic tables are available. These amenities are well maintained. As well, the beach is kept clean.

The only drawback for me was the lack of trees close to the sand for cover from the sun. However, the spectacular ocean view and the large area of sand make this a destination that won't disappoint.

Also, there are stores and restaurants close to the park entrance...just in case you have forgotten something for your picnic or wish to dine away from the beach.

Hope you all enjoy your day...

just. breathe. It was the least crowded beach and most relaxing beach I've been on in years. We were there for about three hours - which is about all the sunshine I can handle at a time. The water is a little cool at first but it's one of the warmer beaches we've experienced :) The boardwalk has stairs and ramps which makes it fairly accessible. While we were there, a wedding party walked through - which was just adorable and happy :) We would definitely...

Great beach with LOTS of parking. There are vault washrooms. Great for a good walk on the shore as the shoreline is quite extensive. Fluffy white sand beach for the kids to play and parents to have a nice rest reading a book. As the beach is quite big, it does not become crowded so you'll have your privacy if you walk just a little bit but you can also be by the walking structure if your kids want to play.

Summerville is a truly gorgeous beach with lots of nice sand and various amenities nearby. The water can be extremely cold though. Walk to the end where the river flows into the ocean and it might be a better temperature allowing you to have some fun floating down on the current.
