Having grown up on the South Shore of N.S., this is my favourite beach. It is long, has decent waves (but not for surfing), and fantastic sand..... and no people. Just to be clear, this is a beach, just a beach. There are a couple of change rooms and outhouses, but no real plumbing or running water. But if you want a vast expanse of sand and be left more-or-less to yourself, this is the place! (plenty of parking, no lifeguards either, there is one restaurant withing walking distance, which is pretty good) Oh, and the water temperature is what you'd expect for the South Shore, where it's the Labrador Current that holds sway, not the Gulf Stream.    Read moreSomerville Beach is a beautiful, shallow saltwater beach perfect for a family day at the seaside.
Washrooms, changing rooms, and picnic tables are available. These amenities are well maintained. As well, the beach is kept clean.
The only drawback for me was the lack of trees close to the sand for cover from the sun. However, the spectacular ocean view and the large area of sand make this a destination that won't disappoint.
Also, there are stores and restaurants close to the park entrance...just in case you have forgotten something for your picnic or wish to dine away from the beach.

The water is a little cool at first but it's one of the warmer beaches we've experienced :) The boardwalk has stairs and ramps which makes it fairly accessible.
