It's a beautiful hiking trail with lovely views of the valley and lake. The path is a little over grown. We were pushing through branches often. At one point we even took the wrong dead end path which seemed a common error since the next group behind us ended up doing the same thing. The wooden bridges and ladders are out at the beginning so it's a more difficult trail at the start without those. Be prepared for a real hike not an easy walk. Bring water with you. The blue berries along the way are less picked over on the way back. I've heard that Thursdays are a good day to pick. We went on a Sunday and still came home with 2 water bottles full of tiny berries. The lake at the end has a mud/organic matter bottom so the water is a bit brown. Don't jump off the rocks, it's not that deep and you can't see where rocks are in the water. Minnows will come right up to your toes.

A great, easy hike with a beautiful lake at the far end of the long loop. Would recommend early July for the most plentiful blueberries (so many that you tire of picking them)! Swimming in the lake at the halfway point of the hike was very refreshing and I did not experience Swimmer's Itch (it seems like the lake is generally too cold for that). The picnic area at the lake has a fire box and a shelter for rain, and sits on a nice little rock face. The falls themselves would likely be great to see in early spring, but later are no more than a jumble of damp rocks. Be sure to bring an appropriate amount of water, and be ready to give space for bikers on the later half of the trail as it overlaps with one or more other trails.

After reading reviews, I expected more from this hike. Though it is definitely a good hike with some beautiful views, I felt somewhat let down. First of all, the lure of McGilvray Falls brought us to this hike. Well, I assume there is a very brief window of opportunity to actually see water at the falls. That being said, at the end of August the falls were dry. Secondly, too much of the trail takes you through dense brush with narrow trail. Finally, trail markings and map coralation are sketchy. We found ourselves disoriented and somewhat lost at times. Overall, it is a good hike and a nice trail, it needs some attention and is probably better at the right time of season.

The main trail is very beginner friendly, no fuss about direction with guiding posts leading the way. but this area offers soo much more with multiple trails leading off from the top of the falls. one being the transcanada trail heading from highway 44 in a northwest direction. and if you have confidence and real skill in your navigation a hike to Townsend lake is extremely enjoyable!! Remember for any off trail trips leave a trip plan and map with a trusted friend in case of emergency.

The reviews I read before I went did not do it justice. It is not a super hard Trail but it is not an easy Trail. If you're not going to do the long Loop don't do it at all the last half is the most scenic. It says to allow for 3 hours we did it sightseeing in an hour and 45 minutes. It is definitely worth the Venture when you don't feel up to something as difficult as Hunt lake. There were no Falls to speak of as the rain has been sparse this season.

Wow! This hike was absolutely stunning. The plant diversity is beautiful. I took the long loop and completed it in about 1.5 hours. The long loop is much quieter, denser, and more diverse than the short loop once it breaks off of the main trail. The terrain along the entire trail is very steep, rocky, and muddy. I am a fairly active person and would give the terrain difficulty a 3.5/5. Do the long loop, the challenge is worth it!
