We camped for two nights at Pog Lake Campground. Despite the fact I watched many campsite reviews on Youtube etc, nothing prepared us for how cramped and overcrowded this campground was, which for us made it pretty miserable. We also toured other campgrounds while there, and I only saw one campsite #42 in Tea Lake Campground, that I would consider worth the trouble of camping. There is no way they are enforcing the number of campers per site limits. The one next to us in Pog Lake Section B had a trailer and 4 tents crammed with loads of people. Other sites did too. The only positive of the campground was a bear that came to eat berries by the check in gate. However, due to all the Tourons, the ranger had to stay the entire time the bear was just being a bear. Not to protect the people, but to protect the bear from the PEOPLE!! The park is beautiful, but they really restrict campers to a narrow corridor and pack the campgrounds in with very small sites. Backcountry camping is probably great, but not everyone can do that type of hiking and camping, but we would still like to feel we are in nature, not an overcrowded mobile home park. We toured Mew Lake, Rock Lake, and Tea Lake. However, not far out of the west gate of the park is a well developed dirt road into Crown Land called Trout Spawn Road. We encountered a local there who said campers are allowed to Boondock there as long as they find a spot that does not block the road. It was beautiful and we would have rather done that! If you can go without electric hookups, we thought maybe Brent or Kiosk might have been better, but they are 3 hours from the east gate. If you like crowded campgrounds and trails, you will love it. There are some great bike and hiking paths, but all very...
Read moreAs a long time camper, we were surprised to have just visited the park for the first time this summer. The park offers everything you would want for the outdoors. Hiking, biking, canoeing, kayaking, camping either in a tent in the wilderness or glamping in a 5th wheel like we did.
We stayed in canisbay lake campground and were very happy. Good park staff, quiet sites and clean. The beach was also very nice with a surprisingly warm lake to boot.
We were able to enjoy several hikes, I would suggest; the lookout, booths rock and hemlock bluff, but in reality every hiking trail in the park has something different to offer.
If you're looking for an easy weekend, or a 2 week family vacation this park is for you. Only wish we could have stayed longer.
I only have 2 concerns: The first is there is only one pump out and water filling station for the entire park. Hundreds of trailers and literally only 2 stations to get this necessary task done.
The second is the lack of fuel availability. The only place in the entire park i found was the Portage store which only offered regular fuel, no diesel and at a 20 cent premium compared to outside the park.
My recommendation is to fill your water before you get there, and make sure you have a full tank of fuel coming in...
Read moreAlgonquin Park could easily be 5 stars. It's a very beautiful landmark with spectacular views of landscapes and wildlife. The main issue I have are newcomers to Canada breaking the rules. They are not paying for parking permits or season passes and are taking up slots of those who paid. I was just there yesterday on Saturday, October 5th, 2024. I was at the trail head and parking area for the Track and Tower Hiking Trail. I had a group of people approach me who were of Indian descent inquire if they were allowed to park without a permit. They had 3 vehicles taking up space while people were forced to park on the shoulder of a live road which is dangerous. I stated that without a permit, they cannot park there. Not only would they be taking a paid spot of someone else, they could be fined. But said they are more than welcomed to drive through the park on highway 60 to enjoy the fall colours. They said thank you and walked away. I went on my hike. Saw them on the lookout on Track and Tower. They decided to keep their vehicles parked there and do the trail anyways. The park is full of immigrants who think the rules don't apply to them. Bylaw park enforcement needs to start doing their jobs. Algonquin Park is becoming the...
