Barron canyon is a beautiful site to behold, every bit on par with the Niagara gorge or even the canyons around Lake Superior. There are trail guides in English and French near the entrance for free use (or paid keeping) which explain the natural history of what you are seeing, but for the most part the setting itself will put any words to shame. Of particular note to the botanical minded is a bonus feature in the form of a rather extensive Eastern hemlock (Tsuga canadensis) grove one passes through on the trail (pictured), and of course the cold climate species clinging to the south rock face in the persistent shade. If you are traveling the country across the trans-Canada highway and want to include Algonquin but don't want to stray too far off the beaten path of the route, this is a relatively easy jaunt from 17. But it is worthy, because the views from the top of the cliffs down to the river are breathtaking themselves! It was pretty busy in October when we visited, I can only imagine in summer... Please pay attention to the cliffs as there are no safety rails, and they shouldn't be. Common sense is required and good management of children and pets. A place we will...
