This trail is NOT wheelchair accessible, despite maps saying it is. I'll start this off by saying, I recognize that there is work that has gone into this to make it better, however it's still not up to code.
Starting the trail off, there is a 2-3 inch drop from the parking lot onto the trail, which is very washed out (I recognize that it just rained) however the steepness of this section of the trail was also way too steep for a manual wheelchair, as I could barely control the speed going down the hill. There are multiple hills along the trail that are too steep in both directions, where I take struggled in my wheelchair. I believe (I may be incorrect) that the maximum lip allowed for accessible areas is 1 inch.
Along several locations of the trail, there are roots that break the surface and cover at least half of the trail.
The boardwalks are not a level surface for going along. In fact nearly all of them are askew sloping sideways. This needs to be fixed! The boardwalks also need a curb on the edges to prevent mobility devices from rolling off the edge. There were multiple times where if I didn't have as good of control of my chair as I do, I would have ended up in the water. At minimum a 3" tall curb along the edges of the boardwalk would be a huge piece of mind.
The last section of the trail, there is a sandy section. Sand is very difficult to self propel and mobility device through.
I really hope that the park staff make edits to this trail to make it accessible, like what they...
Read moreA relatively short wheelchair accessible trail for all ages. It’s beautiful in its own ways dotted with some maple colours but dominated by spruce and green. We saw birds, squirrels, chipmunks roaming around. As some already noted, there’s a section that was a bit wet and we did not notice till one got her socks and shoes wet. I give it 4.5, would have rated 5 if not for the unpleasant smell (not sure what it was) in the beginning section of the trail. It’s great at this time of year, no mosquitoes and nice easy stroll in late afternoon after the Visitor...
Read moreLove this trail. For families with kids, this is probably the best trail of all in Algonquin. The terrain is very easy. It's not long but not too short or boring. The scenery is beautiful. Any trail with boardwalk is always fun for both kids and adults alike. The coolest thing is the wildlife. Red squirrels, chipmunks just come to you even if you don't have their food. They're like kids, as long as you're willing to play, they'll come to you. See my photos 🙂. For birds, you'll need some feed and they'll come eat it on your...
