I love good spirits so when I spotted the open sign at Deep Roots I decided to drop in and try them out. As a local I'd seen the products on the shelf but never bothered to give them a try, preferring the comfort of the brand's I'd gotten used to. That was a mistake and I'm glad to have given them a chance.
The owner is knowledgeable about his products and can describe very well the ingredients used and main ideas behind his products. I don't mean in marketing speak either. Ask about the products and you're going to get honesty that reflects a love for the craft of making fine spirits and liqueur on return.
When in the shop you can order a sample of all the varieties for a low nominal fee or you may try up to two spirits at no cost. I decided to try them all. You can really divide the products up into two categories, spirits (distilled over 80 proof) and liqueurs (distilled then blended with flavorings to around 30-50 proof). The spirits are remarkably distinct from each other, and smooth with no off flavours. You get a very good feel for their base ingredients from taste alone. They offer an Apple Brandy that tastes premium in every way, from an oak nose to an almost spice and caramel body with a smooth dry finish I didn't think I was going to find anything in the lineup to top it.
That is until I tried the Honey Spirit, which was next in the lineup and I'm happy to say the drink I'm sipping during this review. It has a nose that is going to remind you of tequila, but much more mild. The whole experience of this spirit is mild. It has a toasty body and just a hint of sweetness to finish. It's easy to drink neat or on ice and I bet it blends away into a cocktail like a dream.
The Island Tide was the last spirit I sampled before the liqueurs. It's a classic distilled cane sugar spirit with an unmistakable hint of moonshine taste to it. It'll go easy as a base in any cocktail or as a simple pairing with 7up or fruit juice.
Rather than going one by one through the other products let me just say that all the liqueurs would make excellent pairings with desserts or additions to a cocktail, with the Haskap Camerise being a stand out for an aperitif and the Iced Apple being a standout for desserts.
Islanders we've got a real gem here, if you're looking a quality drink this summer when we're all on our staycations I can't say enough good things about the lineup from...
Read moreRecently ran out of my standard coffee addition, the American (spit!) Kahlua. Looked around the shelves and on the very bottom was a distinctive apothecary style bottle with exactly what I wanted…COFFEE LIQUEUR. Without knowing where it came from took it home. Two weeks later we are on the second bottle and even enjoy a sip in the evening on ice. Bottom line is this product should rank right up there with the very best liqueurs on any bar or restaurant shelf clear across this country. That said and with trade barriers being shattered between provinces I will be sending this product out to Vancouver with my Son-in-law who is GM of a pub liquor store operation for exposure. Now to PEI liquor stores “WHY IS THIS ON THE BOTTOM SHELF !” Deep Roots keep up the great work , we’re planning a tour when the family gets here from west...
Read moreWhat an amazing distillery that we had the pleasure of visiting today!! A beautiful spot with friendly, welcoming and extremely knowledgeable staff that answered our questions and were so accommodating to let us sample their amazing products! We enjoyed everything we tried but our favourite take-homes were the peanut butter liqueur (absolutely amazing and a must-try!!), maple liqueur and the spiced apple liqueur. So many products on the market seem to have artificial flavours that get in the way of their quality but I have to say that these were all of extreme quality and the best flavours!! Nothing artificial at all. We will surely be stocking up before we have to leave the island to go back to Ontario. Thank you Deep Roots Distillery for your amazing service and...
