This is certainly a beautiful place to spend some leisure time-- however it was not always so. In September 1941, three German U-boats were ordered to rendezvous HERE, in Tarafal Bay, in order to resupply and to deal with a medical problem. The British learned of this through Ultra, rapidly despatching the River-class submarine HMS Clyde with orders to destroy the enemy vessels. Just as U68 and U111 were in the process of transferring torpedoes in broad daylight on the surface, HMS Clyde nosed into the Bay, causing immediate consternation amongst the German crews. Two of the subs collided, causing damage to the third, U67. Clyde managed to loose off two torpedoes which missed and exploded on the beach. Maybe the beach on which you are currently chilling....
